Yeah I'm not 100% convinced I'm right. People tend to vastly underestimate the skill level required to become a pro athlete. I don't think I'm making that mistake. But there are so few astronaut jobs.

My wife and all my previous long-term girlfriends have gone on to earn a PhD.

Pro athlete requires hitting the genetic lottery and then at least some hard work (but Id argue not necessarily the hardest work - at least 20+ years ago).

Astronaut requires less genetic lottery (though some high level intelligence) and probably more hard work.

Its a tough one. Probably different analysis from the "Right Stuff" era vs today. Back then those dudes were def the peak physical and intelligence. Chuck Yeager (i know not actually an astronaut) couldn't necessarily train into a flying ace - he rewrote that shit on the fly (hah). But today's athlete would make Leonardos head fucking explode.... dunno.
