I'll kick off a discussion with a few odds and ends I watched this week:

True Grit - Talking bout he Coen's version. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Found it a notch better than the John Wayne version. I give it a 7.3 out of 10.

Ivanhoe (1952) - this was quite a big deal when it was made. I believe it was the most expensive movie ever made at the time. It's okay. Like most old movies, the acting and action sequences are comically bad at times. It is also historically inaccurate but whatever - it was watchable. 5.6 out of 10.

Entourage (season 7) - same deal as always. Basic escapism. Short episodes. Some plot arcs are more annoying than others and I could pick at things all day but the basic fact is I keep watching. I fly through a season on DVD in like 3 days. 6 out of 10.

I can't believe I was tricked into seeing Friends With Benefits. I had watched the trailer with the GF and we thought it was going to be a wacky SNL type of flick. It's a thoroughly market-researched rom-com that is trying really hard to sell you a lifestyle and an iPad and a dream about a huge apt in NYC and/or LA.

That was the creepiest mind-control experiment I was ever subjected to. And beneath this layer of business-intelligence creepiness is a horrible movie sprinkled with half-a-dozen good jokes.

1 Matty Rain. I feel dirty.

mudcat and i are in agreement regarding the coen bros' take on true grit. it's one of the few remakes by hollywood that i've paid to see and think it was very well done.

muddy and i will simply always disagree, however, when it comes to 'comically bad acting' in old movies.

speaking of remakes, are any gamelivers going to shell out good money on either of the two new remakes, conan and planet of the apes?

It is unlikely I will see the new Planet of the Apes any time soon. Maybe at some distant future time I might catch it on regular TV or something.

I did eventually get around to seeing the Tim Burton Planet of the Apes. My recollection was that it had some entertaining bits but a bad ending.

I'm a huge silver screen fan. I don't understand why people can't put their viewership in the context of the era.

I doubt I'll see either. I despise remakes for the most part. I find it completely confounding to reward laziness and lack of creativity in Hollywood these days.

now im interested just for the marketing experiment

rayray where can I see it?

I guess that any big-name Hollywood movie does the same thing... everything is an advertising outlet.

I'm just glad we still have real movies made by actual moviemakers who don't give a shit about peddling smartphones and tablets and magazines (FWB promotes GQ)

The Change Up.

Although there are about 7 minutes of funny scenes. This movie as a whole was a complete fail. They must have known it was a failure. I'm very confused by it. I hope someone else watches this so I can get there POV on it. Walked out of it to see Horrible Bosses, then came back to different theater to finish it off. So. So. Bad.

Horrible Bosses was decent.
