Cali, no delegation because there can be only one. Otherwise somewhere along the line, one would get the idea that he/she would want to be the head honcho. And in fact, this did happen. And just because you ask, doesn't mean you get what you want. That is pretty generalized. As for smiting, there are plenty of examples of that in the Old Testament. As for churches being "holy places" that started out in the Old Testament as well when God had his priests to build a temple where He said his Spirit would reside and people could come worship/offer thanks/pray, etc.

not touching any of that...

and I appreciate that.

ive always felt that when someone says theyre praying for me, they are being purposefully condescending towards a nonbeliever. (not saying that you are IAG or nina) thats just how it comes across to me.

Of course. They want to let you know they think something is wrong with you and their beliefs are better than your beliefs, but don't want to come out and say it that way.

If it was just about the actual prayer and they were secure in their beliefs, they could just do it without announcing it. That stuff is ALL ABOUT the announcement.

In related news, the pope (and that weird still-alive former pope guy too I believe) have released formal statements telling atheists and agnostics that god will not necessarily hold their non-belief against them. Like it is supposed to be the cause of celebration on our part or something.

Dude, how you delude yourself that I fit into your dopey little package of superstitious details is irrelevant. There are thousands of bundles of religious details out there and I've got news for you, in many of them, the various gods don't forgive you. How worried are you about that? Well I care about my place in your random little package less than that.

how do these prayers work? If you pray for me to get a job, and I don't get it, can I blame you and god? If I do get a job, am I then indebted to you and god? What if I pray for the people of Kenya, and I pray for me to get a job. Then let's say I get a job (thanks God!) but there's a mass genocide in Kenya... Does that mean god likes me more?

What if it's simple praying for our sins... don't we create those sins? Isn't it a cop out to blame my sins on acts of god. Or when things go wrong, for me to blame it on god's will? What about when things go well? Is that because of god? Why does he/she/it [god] get all the credit and not me?

Why does going to a place which humans deem holy [church] make me closer to god? Hey, I live directly across the street from a church, does that mean I'm closer to god b/c I'm his neighbor? If I go into that church and pray, as an obviously cynical person, will I get smited?

On the note of smites, what is that exactly? Is there any physical evidence of a smite from [STRIKE]the gods[/STRIKE] god?

Why do so many people think there is only one god? Wouldn't it make sense for the All Mighty to delegate to other gods, like a well working machine to keep everything running? Then that would kind of answer my prayer questions. Because if I pray to the god of cooking that I don't burn Thanksgiving dinner, and then I pray to the god of war to keep our troops safe. But then a civilian bombing kills American troops giving out food, but my turkey is awesome, I can then say "okay well the cooking god had my back this Thursday, but the god of war must have missed my memo or was busy helping someone else." At lease then it isn't a "God likes me more than you" situation.

These are honest questions. Thoughts?
You completely lost me in paragraph 2. Of course we create our own sin. What do you mean by blaming your sins on acts of God? Maybe you can clarify and I can give you a better answer...maybe you are mixing sin in with free will somehow...I don't really understand.

I don't know if going to church makes you closer to God. The church is the bride of Christ and the bible encourages people to worship among fellow believers. After 18 years of 2-3x a week, I essentially stopped attending church long ago.l I don't believe you have to go to be close to God, but it sure helps I'm sure. Uh, living next door to a church? I can't even dignify that one sorry...

Yeah a lot of smiting is evident in the Old Testament. I believe there is a lot of smiting going on today as well. I don't want to single out a population or geological area although I have my own opinions, but I don't think God is very happy with the world these days.

Fu....I can see where you would find that statement condescending but it's not really like that and I'm sure your GM doesn't mean that. She is concerned for you is all. If she is a genuine believer, she would feel she was not doing her duty by praying for you...now why she tells you this I don't know.

I agree with this to a large extent but I think it is also an expression about caring for the person.

but like muddy said.... if they really cared, they would pray for someone with no need to announce it.

Muddy is intelligent AND clever.

When someone says 'good luck' to someone, is that like praying for them..? :dunno:

YES!

Unless it's a blackjack dealer at a casino saying it to you as you double down on your 11 vs his hand showing a 6. What he really is saying is "I hope you get an ace".

Same thing at the poker table, "nice hand" really means " fuck you chump! - lucky fukker".

I respect your right to believe that.

I'm gonna go continue on my heathen life as a science believer / athiest

I'm really sorry that you don't understand sarcasm

yeah, I guess it can be taken two ways. I usually assume thats their way of saying they care.

Like when people say I'm sorry. Why are you sorry, its not your fault?

it makes more sense to say "I feel sad for you"

I'm always a little bit baffled by these kind of statements. If you think that this is an especially smiteful time for God, what times would you give for examples when God was happier and there was less smiting going on?
