I don't know what exactly you think these experts are saying that is being wrongly questioned. People legitimately question whether shutting down their lives is worth the perceived benefit of lowering ones chances of catching virus. That's a fair debate.
I don't know of an expert on all aspects related to such question. People can and should form their own opinions, based on their situation and understanding. What a good expert and debate can do, is shed some light on what risks we're dealing with here.
I agree the thing has been politicized, and the analysis of whatever experts has been vague, inconsistent, and lacking in insight. That only makes people more confused and less trusting.
I tend to agree with you on this Reno.

I had covid last June. Had runny nose for a few days then no taste or smell for a few days. No complications since. Have felt pretty invincible for awhile and took advantage of travel deals to Vegas and Atlantic City pretty much once a month since September. I encourage those at risk or afraid of it to get vaccinated but have not decided if I will have it unless I have to in order to travel. I'm open to learning more to make informed decisions for my family.

How about the wifey, did she get it? Anybody else?

Yes. She got it right after me. Kids did not have any symptoms so I'm not sure.

This was never really about us. The majority of us are young and healthy enough to survive COVID without any issue.

It's about doing what we can to reduce the spread. If you get it, you will on average spread it to 3 people (and it might even be higher with new strains). Those 3 pass it on to 3, etc etc, and 10 phases late thousands are infected just through your infection.

Of those thousands, the vast majority will be fine. But a couple will have serious or long term effects. Some, likely elderly, might die. Isn't it worth getting vaccinated, wearing a mask, socially distancing when possible to do your part not to spread this?

That's always how I saw it. People here are super callous towards the elderly and seem to post stats about how few young people die as proof this doesn't matter or is overblown or whatever. This is crazy to me. My parents are happy, healthy, enjoying life and retirement at 73 and 64. Their deaths would be a fine price to pay to avoid some minor inconvenience? My mom lost her younger sister to this, my fiancee lost her 42 year old uncle. Life is precious and should be protected.

Again, from the start, I've conceded that lockdowns are super complicated and could very well do more harm than good. But masks, social distancing, being responsible about social choices, and now getting vaccinated... do it for the lives you'll save, not just yourself.

If you are nervous about vaccinations, please research (with reputable sources) the process in which they go through to be approved. It's extremely intense, thorough, and apolitical. Hope this helps with your decision process, good luck with whatever you decide to do.

VD, I'm sorry about your losses. Thank you for sharing. I'm sure we will all disagree on a number of details. Heading to the pool to drink some beer.

Yep. If this last year and change has taught us anything it's that everyone believes whatever the hell they want to believe and no amount of conversation changes that.

You said you were undecided/open to learning more, so I offered a perspective. Just one man's opinion of course.

really? It has taught me that most Americans believe in human rights and independence even less than I imagined, especially when a little fear mongering is involved.

...you didn't already believe this?

I guess I was generally under the impression that even though we live a sort of isolated, ultimately every man for himself , depressing kind of existence, it's not without some virtue. And that virtue lies in the respect for independence, ultimately minding one's business, respect for people's ability to make their own decision, valuing individual rights.
Now we have a situation where nobody owes you anything, but you allofasudden owe everybody everything :nono:
Not only do they not guarantee you a living, a decent life, whatever, but if you somehow managed to create a decent life for yourself, basically on your own, they can still take it away
....and under guise of greater good :what: ....and everybody is ok with that?

Tons of people weren't okay with it. Many complained. Many held protests.

You clearly weren't okay with it. And what did you do about it?

yes for sure. However they were a minority. I would've expected many more. And obviously it's not so much a person here and there. The question is to our institutions, people in power, and those who have sway. If the general attitude of the people was unequivocal against coercion, the things that were done wouldn't be possible. But a small minority, constantly derided by a propaganda machine isn't gonna be very successful.
But hats off to those people :hattip: who went out and spoke their minds, challenged the authorities, put themselves in uncomfortable and dangerous social situations. Those are the people that make me proud and give me hope :up

lots of expert listening going on up there
Doug Ford an "expert"? I don't think so pal. He got a majority government with only 24% of Ontarians voting and mostly because the previous Premier was despised towards the end of her term. Douggie will be gone next year.
