Still struggle huge with this.

Could never get used to the mask.

Funny this thread got bumped because I just re-ordered CPAP supplies on the phone 20 min ago.

Going to give it another shot. I'm so sick of eating healthy, being fit but bring a fucking walking zombie 80% of the time from the lack of restorative sleep.

good thread, even had an IAG post before I knew who she was!

It's now been over 4 years since I started using the CPAP machine, have used it every day since!

I don't even try to take a nap without my machine.

Cameo by IAG indeed!

I know Shadow recently had surgery for this if anyone has any questions.

Shadow, what type of surgery did you have?

Was it successful?

I was told the success rate is about 60% and not covered by insurance.

Shadow, I'm 6'-0", 185 pounds. Weight loss is not option to resolve my sleep apnea.

Shadow, weigh in here common.

Pretty sure you are pretty close to Shdw's size. I know he is 6 foot and I think about that weight? I will put a note in chat for him to get over here when he has a chance.

Hey guys....i'm not 6'0"

i'm about 5'11" and 175lbs (I was closer to 185 when i had the surgery...not obese by any means)

Probably got diagnosed a little over 5 years ago. I could not use the mask. I had the one that covered my nose and mouth. Felt really bad when the air shot in when u are supposed to be breathing out. Tried a mask that covers just the nose but same feeling....just a little better. and I have nasal congestion problems so it was difficult. In the end I was just sleeping with no mask but on my side. I think that way of sleeping took away almost all sleep apnea problems for me. but when I fell asleep reading or on the couch or on my back i would wake up choking quite frequently

Eventually decided to have the surgery. had my tonsils removed, my uvula removed, and parts of my soft pallate removed. The surgery is supposed to be 0%-85% successful....from what he told me, that means there is no way it solves the apnea 100%. But it will most likely lessen the apnea. So maybe a weaker air pressure setting or maybe no cpap needed....maybe even just a mouthguard will work.

Surgery was shitty as fuck. I woke up with a sore throat. they pumped some morphine in me and it made me want to vomit so I went with no morphine. They even gave me a bottle to take home that i didn't use. I drank water and it shot out my fucking nose. Nurses laughed at me. I ended going from about 185 lbs to 167 in about 2 weeks.

Fast forward 3.5 months til today. I'm at about 175 lbs (slowly gained some back). Still healing (no pain for 2.5 months but everything still shaping back there). Wife says I don't snore at all. I don't feel any more rested but i can sleep on my back without waking up.

Everyone is different but if you ask me if I'd do it again...i'd do it again 100 out of 100 times...in a heartbeat.

And fwiw, I think the success rate of the surgery is better for people with bigger tonsils and aren't as overweight...so I think you'd be a good candidate Daft....but I'm not doctor so i say ask them first

The first time I put on a CPAP mask was at the store getting fitted. They started out with a full face mask and I thought I was going to have a panic attack, I did not like the feeling of having air forced into my mouth, felt like I was gonna gag/choke.

So next mask was a nasal only mask and I got used to it within minutes.

I now use either a nasal mask or the nasal pillow style mask.

I love my CPAP machine.

I don't feel any more rested up.

Incredibly informative post but this part really concerns me.

Were you waking up exhausted prior to your surgery or did you have the surgery more to curb/cease snoring?

My Dad for example snores like a maniac but he feels rested.

I've been told my snoring is very mild but I'll "sleep" for 8 hours and wake up totally exhausted to the point where my eyes burn?

Did you have to pay for the surgery out of pocket? If yes, what was the cost?

Thanks a lot for sharing your story, shdw.

Daft you have troubles sleeping because you are too sexy for sleep.

Shadow as you see, surgery is his only option! When your 5'11.75" and 185 lb with only 5.20% body fat dieting won't do it! I think Dafty once stated about 3% of the fat was in his head? :dunno:

BTW, like you, my sleep apnea is way worse when I sleep on my back (which of course is the most comfortable sleeping position for me).

My sleep study showed I have 81 apnea events an hour on my back (as opposed to 21 when on my side).

I think i don't get enough hours before or after surgery which is why i'm frequently tired. I left out one huge thing. Since my surgery, not every night or anything, but I have experienced dreams. I didn't realize it but before the surgery, the apnea kept me in such a shallow state of sleep I was never able to dream, and if so it wasn't a deep sleep/dream that I remember in the morning. Pretty cool when I had a dream cause I forgot how those felt.

I had insurance but it still cost a pretty penny. I think i paid $600 to the hospital in my co-pay. Then I had co-pay from my doctors....surgeon, anesthesiologist, etc. (I had to see the cardiologist and take a stress test because I failed my EKG) I stayed overnight but the total cost out of my pocket was close to $1k.....give or take a few hundy. That is nothing when you are talking your health, your sleep, your rest.....Now if I lose $1k gambling I want to punch my TV but this felt like money well spent.
