Machuca - Saw this Chilean movie via recommendation of vagabond. Its a very well done story about an English school in Santiago de Chile 1973 that is adjusting with the times and is accepting underprivileged children as with all the equality mantra of communism. While the country's Nationalist stance is losing steam and communism is gaining momentum the kids get exposed to this reality. From both perspective they observe and live the political tension and the coming dictatorship.

Some quotes I like "hagase escuchar Manchua (make yourself heard Machuca)". "yo no soy de aqui, soy del otro lado del rio (i'm not from here, im from the other side of the river), anti dictator Chilean rock group los miserable's song "al otro lado del sol" touches on that.

I heard a slang expression that I hadn't heard in years, that made me smile, "pituco" is how they called the rich kid. Plus points because it was with this actress that I like a lot, I have seen many great projects with her. There was a scene that reminded me of something oksana had mentioned, when the parents where all dolled up smoking lounge style in the living room with the 70s music. ata:yes:. There was a poster of Victor Jara in the poor family's house. By the director's last name and the dedication at the end we can see it was a personal project for him, that's always nice, more authentic.

It wasn't an extraordinary movie but very well made. 7.8 Matty Rains.

I saw Winter's Bone recently. I thought it was okay but over-rated. It was nominated for Best Picture last year but I am not on board for that.

Also, the young actress, Jennifer Lawrence, was nominated for Best Actress and I consider that pretty far out of line. I think sometimes the Academy just likes to name a newcomer to make the statement that they are open-minded and paying attention. She was okay and may well have a good career but she was really inconsistent in this movie.

Overall for the movie, 5.7 out of 10.





I also saw Around The World in 80 Days. It is a former Best Picture winner which many consider the worst Best Picture winner of all time.

I don't doubt it was a revelation in its time (1956), both in terms of the photography and the exotic locales. There were a lot of cameos that I'm sure tickled some viewers. But it is so full of holes and inconsistencies and contrivances. And it's too long with unnecessarily drawn out scenes.

No sir, I don't like it. 4 out of 10.

I agree on Winter's Bone. Very Decent one time watch but I wouldn't do it again unless obligated.

I finally watched The Last King Of Scotland (2006).

Not sure why it took me this long to get around to it, but it did. Forest Whitaker gives an amazing performance as Idi Amin the President of Uganda. Without giving too much away, if you have not seen this movie, it's quite interesting, despite it being about Uganda. True stories always seem to add a bit more to it for me, not sure why. I also like when they show the real person the movie was based on at the end, which they did and a small summary of what happened since the events depicted in the film. I couldn't see watching it over and over again, but as a first view it was quite enjoyable. Especially the hook scene.

I did make the error of omitting that link which made the initial post not make much sense. It was just a mundane clerical error and with the link in the context it makes perfect sense.

Anyone who does not agree can kiss my my over sized Lithuanian balls and grundle.
 
I am currently watching season 1 of Damages on DVD. I can see all kinds of problems with it and reasons why I shouldn't like it - but I keep watching and actually find myself thinking about the next upcoming episode during the day.

It's a trashy page turner which, I have to admit, is working for me so far.

No rating until I have completed the season but I thought I would toss that in there.

It's been awhile since I saw it and I don't remember the subtleties. A 7 rating can mean anything thing from 6.5 to 7.5 - which are significantly different things for me - but I think in this case it meant 7.

(I wish they would have 100 point ratings at imdb but then most people are probably not as persnickety about these things as me.)

My recollection was that it was not as great a movie as it was a great performance by Whitaker. I'm not a huge James McAvoy fan although I thought this was one of his better performances.

But still and all, 7 is a pretty high rating for me. Clear thumbs up.

Good to know. Seems like I generally rate films I like a bit higher than you do...either that ir I don't bother reviewing films I don't like.
