Interesting topic. He plays that same likable guy so much (basically himself from what I can tell) that it is hard to evaluate how much I am liking that likable guy and how much I am liking a good performance.

I have no answer for that. No conclusion to be reached. I have seen him play darker characters at times and he is always completely competent. He has talent. I understand he is very good as Poe in the recent movie, The Raven, but I haven't seen it.



His best work to me is in Being John Malkovich but that is really as much about liking the movie as saying, wow, good work John (which it was).

He was very good in The Grifters.
