Angelina Jolie underwent a preventative double mastectomy in 2013 after genetic testing revealed she had a significantly elevated risk of developing breast cancer due to a mutation in the BRCA1 gene. The surgery reduced her risk of breast cancer from 87% to under 5%.
Jolie elected to have her breasts reconstructed using teardrop-shaped breast implants and donor skin to provide support and contour. The reconstruction surgeries were done through incisions in the creases underneath her breasts to minimize scarring.
