Anyone Ever Own An Audi?

Don't buy extended warranty. Never had a car break down on me and I do my own maintenance on my cars like changing the oil, fluids, filters, batteries etc. You can save lots of money by doing your own maintenance and it's not really hard. If you can use a screwdriver and a ratchet you can do it. AUDI's are good vehicles and you will love it.

An Audi is a great ride in my opinion, I just cautioned in purchasing a pre-owned without extra protection. The ones I have ridden in have been very smooth, I just added my thoughts to make sure that the emotion of the ride does not get in the way of making a sound decision.

Well it was a Trans Am actually, but what happened was I realized it simply wasn't practical given that my current car had 117,000 miles on it and I should probably deal with that first.

So some stuff I have read online suggests that BMW's are actually easier to work on from a maintenance perspective, can anyone comment on that? Some of the stuff I read was 5 years old as well, has Audi made adjustments to the way things are positioned under the hood?

This is one comment in particular that made me wonder:

As a home mechanic who worked on both cars, I can tell you BMW engineering is superior. No comparison. When you have to replace the timing belt with Audi, you would have to take to front bumper out of the way. Money you saved with the cost of the car would be wasted by mechanic hours when they have to put additional 3-4 hours of labor to do the same job. BMW Inline 6 engines are easier to work on and superior in performance. To change spark plugs in Audi, the right side of plugs are blocked by the Air filter unit. Left side of the plugs are covered by the coolant tank. To work around them, you would have to burn additional 30 minutes of your time.

Modern BMW cars are all driven by timing chain. As of today, ALL Audi cars are driven by 100K rubber timing belt, and the replacement job would run you $1200. And if you have the balls to take on this job on your own, you would quickly find out why mechanics charge so much money for this job compare to other cars like Honda.

How many miles do you average a year? I average about 10,000 miles per vehicle but I have 3 cars/trucks and a motorcycle. My point is if you buy a 2-3 year old used car with 30,000 miles max on it do you see yourself driving it beyond the next 7-8 years? Most of the expensive repairs are needed after 100,000 miles. So if you are worried about things breaking down determine where you see yourself with this vehicle in the next 7-8 years.

Just listen to Pavy. Buying a pre-owned Audi without extended warranty is like
Laying -300. The juice doesn't matter when you only pick winners.

I have bought and sold 10-12 vehicles in the last 20 years. I never bought extended warranty on any vehicle whether it was purchased new or used. The most money I have ever spent at the mechanic was $700 when I had to replace the clutch and all the belts in my 3000 GT.

Yeah I see what you are saying. I probably put about the same on mine about 10,000 a year. In that scenario I would have to get something with about 20K miles or less on it.

But I still can't seem to get a straight answer on whether or not Audi's are reliable cars. I go to Consumer Reports and they say between the years of 2001-2010 in the luxury models Audi A6 (2.7T and 3.0T) are two of the worst in terms of reliability. I also noticed many other cars on that list had AWD. Is there some kind of link between AWD and less reliability?

Totally disagree on the extended warrantee. I had the timing chain snap on my grand am and got a new engine for $100. If you are looking at foreign cars,it is more important to get an extended warranty. Parts/service are higher for these so I woul cover my ass if I'm CB.
