I just discovered that JL has perfect pitch. I drove him home from school earlier and after parking the car, I locked the doors which briefly honked the horn, and I'm not sure why but I asked him whether he could tell what note the horn was. He didn't hesitate one second: "It sounds like a C." I checked it with my guitar tuner app and it was between a B and a C. Then I asked him to sing an E and a G and he fokkin nailed both, i.e. the guitar tuner app was showing both notes as being in tune.

I have proof on video.

I did not have perfect pitch as a kid, and neither did my wife.

Amazeballs.

My mom is visiting from Quebec. Mommy Rain does not speak very good English, and that amuses JL.

-Grand-maman, try to say "third".
-Turd.

So we're having a late 9th birthday party for JL with his friends and classmates.

I guess that at this age, friendships are starting to become more selective, and so JL wasn't invited to this kid's (let's call him Andrew) latest birthday party, which made him experience the first of such awkward situations (i.e. other classmates would ask him if he was planning to come to Andrew's party and he would have to tell them that he never got an invite.) JL was a bit upset about it, as were wifey and I because we had started becoming friendly with Andrew's parents.

Wifey and I just shrugged it off originally - thus is the risk of befriending your kid's friends' parents.

But then came time for JL to decide who he was inviting to his own birthday party. He listed Andrew.

Me - Are you sure you want to invite Andrew?
JL- Yeah.
Me - Ok. 🤷‍♂️

I didn't want to tell him that I thought Andrew would politely decline.

Well, Andrew's parents just confirmed that they would all be in attendance.

The little shit's got some explainin' to do.

I wish my son had the ability to be petty - I would gleefully watch it unfold. Alas, I think he thinks that him not being invited to A's party was a planning mistake.

Birthday parties are the fucking worst. Hosted Beas at home on Sat (yay 5yo today), then another kids yesterday and some other kids today (it's a holiday here).

I think I alienated some kids parents when I said yesterday, "at what age do we stop inviting every kid in the class and just host 5-6 close friends for a sleep over?"

Sometimes kids get into minor arguments and they hate each other for awhile, not sure if that’s what happened between JL and Andrew but I remember that happening a lot growing up

Good point but I don't think that's what happened here. I think Andrew and JL just share common closer friends but they're not really friends themselves. JL is a bit oblivious to this stuff.

Me - Do you ever play or talk with Andrew?
JL - Not really.
Me - Well.
JL - But he invited me last year!
Me - Last year you were the new kid.
JL - Yeah.

You've got least 3 more down the pipeline.

At least you won't have to buy a gift for all parties your child won't now be invited too.

Thank God JL is good kid not holding it against the kid. Possible a bit naive or maybe very shrewd with planning an enormous retaliation down the road? :dunno:

Probably nothing at all but if it concerns you and wifey a lot, might plan a session to talk with a profession? :dunno:

That's a good point. And on the issue of gifts - the amount of stupid fucking cheap crap that these kids get is disgusting, both as gifts and in goodie bags. Next time we have a party for the girl it's gonna be no gifts. My wife says theres a thing where you tell everyone to just give $5 and let the kid buy one gift.

JL and his classmates give each other solid stuff though - Nintendo/Roblox/Google Play gift cards and Pokemon cards. They all opened packs together and celebrated their rare pulls, was cool to see.

Andrew sat right next to JL for the cake portion of the party. Utter lack of shame. His dad though - he did not make eye contact when he came to pick up his little shit. I see you buddy, I fokkin see you.
