I didn't see any movies this week so nothing to discuss there.

I have been watching Season 3 of Breaking Bad - I think I've seen 8 episodes so far. Loving it.

So here are some random movie-related thoughts.

Watching reviews for Larry Crowne, I saw 3 different reviewers describe Julia Roberts as one of the most likable stars working today. I don't think I know anyone that likes Julia Roberts. My one buddy despises her so much, he refuses to see anything she is in - even if I assure him that it is really great in spite of her (Charlie Wilson's War).

They also describe Tom Hanks in same way. I agree he has always been and remains likable - but is it slipping? I say yes, a bit.

Hanks co-wrote Larry Crowne with Nia Vardalos who wrote My Big Fat Greek Wedding. That was an odd phenomenon. It made all kinds of money and got several award nominations - despite being one of the worst movies of all time. Painful to watch. The reviews I saw of Larry Crowne were 2 thumbs down and 1 thumbs up. Based on the Julia Roberts and Nia Vardalos factors, I am suspecting I am more likely to fall in with the thumbs down crowd - although I'd say there is a pretty good chance I will never see it.

I understand the new Transformers movie is 2.5 hours long. I haven't seen any of the Transformers movies and I won't be seeing this. Lots of people will though - no doubt about that. Many happy returns to one and all. Remember to pee before it starts.

Other new release options this week: Bad Teacher and Cars 2. I dunno man.

Saw Midnight in Paris on Saturday

I'm a big Own Wilson Fan, and he did ok in this movie. but the script/plot was horrible. and the acting from all the non- "historic" actors was horrendous with the hot chick from the Notebook at the top of that horrendous list.

the only saving grace of the movie was the Ernest Hemingway actor.

at least there were some great shots of Paris

also, at alot of theatres the movie "Bridesmaids" is still out. I've seen it twice and bigal has seen it 3x.

I think it is the funniest movie i've seen in the theatre in 2-3 years. had me rolling. really good female low brow stuff if you haven't seen it yet

since joining the netflix free trial I have watched:
Yo Gabba Gabba about 12 times, not sure which episodes. I highly recommend it.
Diego/Dora shit about 20 times... not recommended.
Hot Tub Time Machine, I usually like stupid comedies. This had it moments but didn't make it through the whole movie.

Documentaries:
Esperado ( or something like that) footage from Afghanistan and the story of a battalions 3 month stay in one of the hot spots. I liked it. A few soldiers got killed, they killed some folks. Interesting watching what they have to go through.

Aryan Brotherhood: story of the prison gang. They are some wicked/twisted white folks

Saw Tree of Life Saturday. Visually, it's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Definitely not a movie for everyone.

Wow. That looks awesome. How have I not heard of that? Usually a movie with Brad Pitt is promoted like mad.

I generally like Pitt movies. I don't think there are any that I truly dislike.

I think I lasted about a season of Weeds.

I have a very bad feeling about Tree of Life. Although the critical reviews I have seen all praise it, it sounds a lot like another Terence Malick film - The Thin Red Line - i.e. very pretentious and boring - and not up my alley.

I have to say this though. Bryan Cranston is an absolute revelation in Breaking Bad. Prior to that, I had only seen him in comic roles - and he is frankly not all that good. I mean sure, he is probably a better comic actor than the average guy walking down the street but he is very broad and obvious and kinda makes me role my eyes a lot.

His dramatic acting in Breaking Bad is excellent. Not just adequate - outstanding.

agreed. Once I started watching Breaking Bad, I could never see him in the same light again. amazing how silly he was.....and how he can portray such a great complex character so well now.

also, curious case of Benjamin Buttons is on netflix streaming now.....

I fell asleep to it in the theatre
