  • Native American Policy: Young advocated for the enslavement of Native American children to "civilize" them, and supported the Indian slave trade in Utah.
  • Interracial Marriage Rhetoric: He strongly opposed interracial marriage, once stating that the penalty for a white person mixing blood with the "seed of Cain" should be "death on the spot".

2. Violence and Rhetoric
  • Mountain Meadows Massacre (1857): While historical evidence suggests Young did not directly order the killing of 120+ non-Mormon immigrants, his fiery rhetoric and the tense, paranoid environment he created were major factors in the massacre, and he was involved in the subsequent cover-up.
  • The Mormon Reformation (1856-57): During this time, Young used extreme, violent rhetoric against "apostates" and sinners, creating a climate of fear.
  • "Blood Atonement" Teaching: Young taught a doctrine of "blood atonement," which suggested that certain severe sins could only be forgiven if the sinner’s own blood was spilled.
  • Support of "Avenging Angels": Critics allege he authorized a group of enforcers (sometimes called "Danites" or "Avenging Angels") to threaten or kill those who opposed him or left the faith.

3. Polygamy and Treatment of Women
  • Prolific Polygamy: Young married dozens of women (estimates vary, but some list over 50), including women who were underage or already married to others.
  • Pressure to Marry: The pressure to enter plural marriage was intense, as it was taught as a requirement for the highest level of heaven.
  • Abusive Rhetoric: He made numerous derogatory remarks towards women, sometimes calling them "sisters of the devil" and blaming them for various societal issues.

4. Authoritarianism and Financial Misconduct
  • Dictatorial Control: As governor and church president, Young exercised absolute control over Utah politics and economics.
  • Personal Enrichment: Critics argue that Young enriched himself at the expense of his followers, using church tithing funds for private business ventures and failing to clearly separate his personal finances from the church's, making him one of the wealthiest men in the West at the time.
  • Opposing the Government: He often defied the U.S. federal government, which led to the Utah War (1857-1858) and his removal as territorial governor.

5. Other Controversial Teachings
  • Adam-God Doctrine: Young taught that Adam was actually God the Father, a doctrine the modern LDS Church explicitly disavows.
  • Law of Adoption: He introduced a practice where members were sealed to him as a "prophet" rather than to their own parents, creating a massive, hierarchical family structure that was later abandoned.
While proponents often describe these actions as products of a "messy" frontier, or "falling short" while acting as an imperfect human, critics maintain that these actions represent a distinct, authoritarian, and often violent, leadership style.
