what was the red card for?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/dec/21/ajax-az-alkmaar-goalkeeper-fan

The referee Bas Nijhuis responded to the incident by showing Esteban a red card for violent conduct, prompting an outraged Alkmaar coach Gertjan Verbeek to order his side to walk off in protest.

Nijhuis said afterwards: "I understand that Esteban was defending himself, but he walked to him [the supporter] and kicked him multiple times. He could also have walked away."

The Laws of Football state: "A player is guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball. He is also guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against a team-mate, spectator, match official or any other person."

It's like when Ron Artest attacked that fan in Detroit. The only difference is that the fan went on the pitch instead of the player going to the stands like Artest did.

Wonder how that same official would respond if some spectator were coming onto the field and stomping the crap out of him and the players just walked away?
i hope we get to find out how he responds to the same circumstance.

liked this quote in the article at espn: "Esteban Alvarado deflected the attack but was given a red card for kicking the supporter in anger immediately afterward."

has anyone here ever kicked someone out of joy?

It makes sense to me. After the guy was on ground he should have walked away instead of repeatedly kicking him. As a professional he has an obligation to avoid the aftermath of the situation.

As a professional, he should have stomped the shit out of the guy and then spit on him.

If I am bartending and some guy gets violent with me, you best believe he is getting stomped. Maybe if more professionals beat the crap out of unruly spectators, it may curb the insanity.
