We traveled to many different parts of Nicaragua with the first stop in Leon where we got to hike and sled down the ashes/volcanic rocks of Cerro Negro. Leon is so underdeveloped and seemingly has not changed a bit since our first visit in 2015. The people are so pleasant there but sadly had to live in poverty without much chance of escape or growth. Ironically I felt safer there even in the middle of the night as it is has a small town feel to it. We visited families on the hill that lived in horrible conditions. I fear a heavy storm with flooding and/or heavy winds will wipe out their entire community. We took suitcases of toys, clothes, toothbrushes and handed them out the day after Christmas. The look on their faces when we gave them the smallest things was priceless.

I drank a ton of Flor De Cana (factory is about 45 minutes from Leon). A medium bottle at restaurants was about $9.00 and would be enough for 2 people for an entire dinner. I wanted to buy a 35 year aged special release bottle as they said only 350 were made, but couldn't bring myself to spend $4,000. The bottle itself is exquisite, shaped as a volcano.

We spent time with her family talking for hours without phones or TVs to interrupt quality time together. We were interrupted by the traditional Gigantonas in the street that stopped for a few dollars to make jokes and play their drums.
