Is it illegal if properly declared and import taxes are paid?

I looked into it and it seems that you can't do it without a permit. Without it customs will confiscate the booze and tell you to GFY.

The SAQ does emit temporary permits for you to import booze, but then you have to pay the government whatever markup they decide your booze would command if it were being sold in their stores. I'm sure the LCBO has a similar deal. Obviously you're not gonna save any money going that route, but it might make sense if you really want that one unavailable bottle.

(There's this website in the UK that will mail you some scotch with no guarantees - either it goes through illegally and you don't have to pay any tax, either it gets seized and you lose both your booze & money. According to them the success rate is not very high.)

Years ago I was returning to Vancouver BC from Washington State and had a sealed mickey of Rum on the front seat of my car with me that I bought on the reserve at Lummi Casino.

Customs asked me about it and I told them the truth. They gave me two options:

1) Pay the duty - which made the cost 2X what it would have cost in BC OR
2) Surrender it to the Canadian governement.

I chose option:

3) Pour it out on the pavement in front of the Canadian Customs office.

They didn't like that very much, I didn't give a fuck, and after a brief warning I was allowed on my way.

My point was that it was my property and I'd rather dispose of it than surrender it to the government.

I have had a few disagreements with Canadian Customs officers over the years.

Saulty ought to do himself a favor and go purchase and sample the Karlsson's just to confirm to me how tasty it is.

If they can stock it at a random Indian reservation gas station, surely the LCBO, the world's largest alcohol buyer can get it for me.

I will go buy it tomorrow when I go for lunch. I trust you it's good vodka. I will start drinking screwdrivers for breakfast on weekends.

If it was me I would have poured it in my gas tank.
