I only ride on the road where there is a bicycle lane, and there are plenty here.

I don't doubt it. I often ride on the sidewalk when it seems to be obviously the safer option. But I notice you have to be very careful approaching an intersection even when you have a green light. Cars are turning right and you have to make sure they are stopping and that you make eye contact.

Even being aware of this I've sometimes felt I'm leaving too much to chance. I'm assuming the driver is paying attention and he might not be
