My neighbor and friend Jeff died in the middle of December 2024, 3 days before his 60th birthday.

He died alone.

10 days after he died I called one of the local funeral homes and asked if they were aware of any service and the FD on duty contacted the hospital morgue and told me Jeffs body was unclaimed. I asked what would happen next.

The funeral director said that as his friend I could apply for benefits from the city of Windsor on Jeffs behalf to get him buried. No embalming, no service nothing. They said I could have a brief few minutes with him to say goodbye before they took him to the cemetary.

He was in cold storage for 3 weeks and unembalmed and on the day of his funeral they called me to say it would be ok to see him but there may be a bad smell and they couldn't shave him due to not being embalmed. I was ready for the worst.

I saw him and it was a very nice setup, he looked good but he was wrapped in a shroud and only his face was exposed.

I took some photos for his girlfriend who is in New Brunswick and couldn't make it back for the burial.

I couldn't detect any foul odour but didn't get up real close.

I received a copy of the bill the city of Windsor paid, it was discounted from $6000CAD to $3800 CAD.

Apparently not. But I don't fault her, there was no official visitation or schedule, it was supposed to be direct to cemetery but they offered me the courtesy of a short viewing/visit before burial. Everything was done with the funeral homes convenience in mind. This was a city burial, just the basics.

I got a call on the Monday saying they would be burying him on Friday at 2pm and that if I showed up at 1230 I could have a viewing, which I did.


The saddest thing was that there was nobody other than me there to mourn for him and say goodbye.
