The San Diego Padres, who sported the MLB worse batting average in 2009, are taking steps this offseason to improve their offense ready for 2010. In an unusual move they gave Westley Strellis, a 23 year old free agent with no MLB playing time, a trial in a retail location in Atlanta.
In an unusual step, the Padres organized the trial to happen in the Electronics section of Walmart where Strellis was to bat a simulated game. In 35 at bats, he managed to destroy 29 flat screen TVs (a .829 batting average) which would prove an asset to the Padres offense since most of their players find themselves regularly drowning under the Mendoza Line.
There appeared to be a lack of communication between the Padres and Walmart at the end of the trial when Strellis waited for the San Diego scout but found himself taken away by police. On his police report it was noted that he was in possession of antidepressants; presumably these were in case he had been a victim of a scam and was about to sign for the Pittsburgh Pirates instead.
