no he means why did the VP not get the job..

I know that back in those days, or maybe earlier the VP was the guy that got 2nd in the election. So i'm really not sure why the VP Hannibal guy wouldn't have taken over for Lincoln either.... I guess things were different then

Why did Andrew "Junior" Johnson take over from Lincoln anyway? Generally the vice-president takes over when a president dies in office. And I happen to know Lincoln's VP because he had quite a distinctive name. Hannibal Hamlin.

Why wasn't there a President Hamlin I wonder?

There's something I don't know. Seems like something I could probably look up on the internet though.

Johnson was the VP in Lincoln's second term, Hamlin was the VP in his first.

They were born within a year of each other so they can be compared in the same era. Hamlin was a former woodcutter and so had physical strength and would have been one of the more feared hitters in the lineup. Jones was energetic and effective in fighting the rebellion and beginning the transition to Reconstruction and so would have hit for a high average and been a persistent threat to steal when on base with a career 89.3% success rate.

Hamlin's history is pretty interesting actually. He was dumped for a "War Democrat" in Andrew Johnson at the urging of Republicans for "political balance" on the 1864 ticket, even though Lincoln didn't really want the change. Hamlin was disappointed with how little authority he held as the Vice President anyway and spent most of his time back in Maine. William Pitt Fessenden, a political rival of Hamlin's, subsequently resigned as Secretary of the Treasury to regain his seat in the Senate and block Hamlin from getting a seat. Then while in the Senate, blocked him from getting his old job as Secretary of the Treasury. Republican legislators eventually elected him to return to the Senate in 1869 by a single vote.

So I guess Andrew Johnson was only VP for about 4.5 seconds. Lincoln was shot very soon after that inauguration. That must have been a fine how-do-you-do-for Hannibal Hamlin.

Mind you Hannibal probably had the better nickname. Hannibal the Cannibal > Junior Johnson.

Did not sleep well - woke up at ~5 - but am nonetheless feeling pretty good. Shaved, showered, mentally reviewed my fokking anecdotes.

Fiddled around with a few sporcle quizzes and my brain seems to be working.

I'm as ready as I'm gonna be.
