John and Doris Foster were on a mission to reclaim the space where their cars should live.
"We wanted our garage back, but we didn't have anywhere else to put all the stuff inside it," John said. "We needed more storage space."
The duo, of Kemp Woods in Chesapeake, tried to find a shed, or even a kit to build one, for their backyard. But nothing fit their needs or budget the way they wanted it to. It was then that John decided to build a shed himself.
"I have done lot of do-it-yourself projects in the past," he said. " I just had to figure out how I was going to make time for this one. I'm glad I did, because it's just what we wanted and needed."
Last year the Foster s started the 8-by-12-foot shed project over the Independence Day weekend. John, who works for Stihl, labored on it nights and weekends as the weather allowed.
He finished the shed on Labor Day. The $2,300 project includes a planting and potting area to house his wife's yard materials.
"He built a fold-up table and storage area for the garden items I enjoy using," Doris said. "I love how everything turned out."
John said he acquired his handyman skills from his father, who framed houses.
"I've been around it all my life," he said. "I learned the basics at a young age."
John had already put his skills to the test by remodeling the kitchen in a former house and installing a sprinkler system. He is in the middle of a major upgrade to his family room and will start on his kitchen remodel next.
"Once you start, you just go through the entire house in a wave," he said. "You can't stop until you get it all done."
The Fosters are in the process of moving their yard equipment and other tools to the shed. John hopes to add more shelving and hooks to keep the space neat and organized.
John said he was glad he opted to build the shed himself as it allowed for a custom design and more creativity in the project.
"It fits our needs better than something we could have bought at the store," John said. "And we can continue to add our own touches as we go."
As the duo have emptied the garage, the open space became a great work area and storage space for their current renovations.
"The garage is now being used to store the items we need for the family room makeover," John said. "Eventually, we will get our garage back."
