Meh. Did he confess in that 20 minute un-mirandized period though? Also if the gun was in the backpack you can best believe inevitable discovery will be made to apply.

My money is on an eventual plea, he does 12-20 and dies at home relatively comfortably having sold a book or two (though 2/3 gonna go to the estranged spouse and kids).

But if local cops asked him questions that were investigatory in nature pre-Miranda, at a minimum, the optics are terrible. He’s never confessed. It’s not all or nothing.

Was he free to leave when they approached him? I doubt it. I’m not defending him. Just making conversation, Bone Bone.

Same, just observing. Youre more of an expert on it than I. But I agree its just an optical issue (and one that defense was sure to introduce whether or not true) and probably shouldn't effect final judgement much.

Id probably change my tune if he had confessed in those 20mins (i seriously didnt know either way).

All of this gives me so much faith in the system. I dunno why. Its not just the legal system but society as a whole. It doesnt always work perfectly, nothing does, but god damn its pretty good. Even Mangione played an important part in correcting an over correction in favor of the insurers/corporatization of human health. The world needed Mangione more than it needed Brian Thompson and there it is. Just like we need cops like these and laws/rules that they inevitably dont follow to a tee and a system to sort it out. Its really quite a beautiful thing.

Working draft....

I knew Brian well and I am of course saddened as I look at his beautiful plastic estranged wife Terry and his spoiled kids Thadeus and Chad. Of course im sorry that his son Francis couldn't be here but we all understand how important the lacrosse tournament is.

I hesitate to say this, but I think we all feel like Brian might have deserved it. [Pause for applause]. I don't mean Brian specifically, but Brian metaphorically. One of these corporate health care douches surely needed to be gunned down in spectacular fashion. Remind these fuckers that their decisions have real life consequences. Amirite? [insert socio political commentary here]. It all reminds me of the time that Brian and me and the rest of frat brothers bullied that gay kid so much sophomore year and then he blew his brains out at the football game. Come to think of it, Brian specificaly DID deserve it. We all do.

Can't do any more... at Optum urgent care with kid currently getting free and easy health care. Weeeeeee!!!
