I like to hear about my friends'/families' children's accomplishments, and I am happy for them.

I do, too. I mean that. Why else have good friends, right?

But there’s a line where it becomes cringe (Vegas Dave had the perfect word for it).

Your kid isn’t any more important than anyone else’s kid. The world doesn’t revolve around whether your kid gets accepted to Dartmouth. Your son speaks 5 languages? Thats fucking awesome, honestly. But you don’t have to remind me 3 times a year.

Yeah see this is compounded by the fact that since they are always talking about their kids, they always forget who they told this to already, so they have to let you know just in case.

My dad does this all the time with his woe-is-me stories, bitches about everything non-stop so winds up repeating the same gripes every check-in. Which of course gets worse with age.

All the more reason to hard steer the convo elsewhere. "Yeah, you told me last time, that's awesome. ANYWAY HOW BAD ARE THE PIRATES?!?"

THIS resonates with me. I've out and out told him that im not listening to this crap anymore. On my last trip to FL I gave him MLB network so we can hopefully talk Yankees. He hasn't watched games in about 25 years so we'll see if it takes.

I think either way its about being one dimensional (and self absorbed to boot). If your children or your woes define you i only have a tiny amount of time to give to you.

Exactly this. My relationship with my dad at this point is just a 5-10m one-sided conversation every week or two.

He doesn't care about what's going on with me, so I don't bother to tell him. He vents a bit, I pretend to listen, quota met.

And I'm only doing that bare minimum out of respect to my late mom and sense of obligation to family. In general I already have too little time for friends and things I want to be doing, why burn more of it on one dimensional self absorbed types?

Devils advocate, really only that b/c sounds like we're in the same boat, i think these boomer males DID pour a lot into their families but in a way we cant really understand. They were the selfless bread winners expected to just work a job. They didn't have easy access to emotional support and they lived by a "code" that expected them to be a certain way.

I was raised middle class in a traditional family. We had lean years and good years and although their marriage fell apart and probably affected us kids my parents did pretty darn good. While mom was mostly stay at home and I have almost infinite loyalty to her, I kinda think dad probably played a major role in creating me as well (flaws and all).

Not saying this fits your family @Vegas Dave. But i suspect it does fir a good number of millenials.

I’m pretty much on the same page as yall.

My dad became a senile hoarder that just talks about the some same stuff you mentioned and I fade it out.

‘Illegals are flooding in the country’ yada yada

Try to revert the convo to hockey, similar to how boner steers towards yanks.

Just piggybacked my FL trip and flew solo to Socal, to check up on him. Recently found out he has colon cancer at 76. Never got a colonoscopy until now. Started chemo.

Fun stuff.

I think you have very high standards for clutter Mr. Blisster. You'd be horrified by my place/lifestyle.
