Here are the group standings.

For example Norway is seeded 12 because they have 0 points but have worst differential than Latvia who also has 0 points.

Russia is seeded 5 because they have 6 points but have better goal differential than Switzerland who also has 6 points.

That's why the announcers knew the pairings.

LOL! Saulty, what you're saying appears to be Greek to RC! I ask one simple question and get this from you guys ..... it must be me!

Is there an American or Canadian here who can answer my question in post #73?

SOCHI -- Drew Doughty's goal at 2:32 of overtime gave Canada a 2-1 win against Finland on Sunday and a bye into the quarterfinals at the 2014 Sochi Olympics men's hockey tournament.

The Canada-Finland game was the final one of the preliminary round and set the stage for the knockout portion of the tournament.

With the teams needing extra time to decide a winner, that meant Sweden clinched the No. 1 spot in preliminary round. The United States, which beat Slovenia 5-1 on Sunday, earned the No. 2 spot. Canada, the winner of Group B, seeded third. Finland, with seven points, is the best of the non-first place finishers and earned the final bye into the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The remaining eight teams play Tuesday in elimination games to determine the other four quarterfinalists. There are no games Monday.

That means Russia finishes fifth and will play an elimination game Tuesday against Norway, the No. 12 seed. Playing that extra game is something that was not expected by many when the tournament started.

Another qualification games will feature seventh-seeded Czech Republic playing 10th-place, Slovakia.

Slovenia finished eighth and will play the ninth-place team, Austria. One of those teams will reach the quarterfinals for the first time in the history of their nation. Austria finished fifth in 1928 but that tournament was played under a format which did not include a quarterfinal round.

Latvia finished 11th and will play the sixth-place team, Switzerland. Those teams played a classic during group play, won 1-0 by the Swiss on a goal scored with 7.9 seconds remaining in regulation.

The winners of games Tuesday will advance to the quarterfinals Wednesday. The winner of the 8-9 game between Slovenia and Austria will play Sweden; the winner of 7-10 game between the Czech Republic and Slovakia will play the United States; the winner of the 6-11 game between Switzerland and Latvia will play Canada; and Finland will play the winner of the 5-12 game between Russia and Norway.

TY Saulty! So Finland gets the unenviable proposition of having to probably play Russia! Glad it wasn't the USA or Canada! Looks like the latter two will have to go at it in the semi-final if they get past their next opponent!

If you read the foking thread Mr.M

well, the way I see it Russia will play Norway and then likely to play the loser of todays Finlad/Canada. Not a bad set up. And my futures bet Sweden (2) or (1)seed is setting up for a relatively easy opponent in the all important quarterfinal. (although they kinda suck now)

I just heard a rumor about Slava Voynov calling out his LA teammate Jonathan Quick for cheating. He said he has done the same thing in the NHL.

I'm guessing he is referring to pushing the net off..

Si, Amigo!!!

Will be interesting times in the Kings dressing room when they return, but of course we all know what Quick did. To call your own teammate out like that is pretty bad though.
