Honest Ed’s, the Toronto retail landmark known for its dazzling outdoor signage and annual turkey giveaways, is up for sale.

now this makes me a little sad.

plommers old man and his great grandmother were regulars at this store long before he was born.

Will always be a HUGH fan of Ed Mirvish and his store.

Both my parents lived in the area as young people and I was born a few blocks away - Honest Ed's is a Toronto landmark.

Mirvish was quite the character up until his death.

It would probably be the biggest strip club in the world. The space is ginormous.

It's the crappiest-looking store you've never been into. It's hard to describe.

Every sign is hand-written/painted. There has to be thousands of them in the store.

certainly looks like a glorified dollar store, but I'm sure you could find some interesting stuff in there.

It's not even that cheap. You do find a lot of stuff that chain dollar stores don't have, plus they have a big groceries section downstairs filled with unusual imports like Israeli hazelnut spread.

But "glorified dollar store" is pretty much correct.

Used to live a couple blocks away on Brunswick. They have everything a newly-landed filthy Quebec immigrant needs for the house.

Several buildings in fact. Most of the cost is probably the prime location.

Not that my opinion as a newish Torontonian matters, but I'm all for tearing it down as long as they keep something of it. Maybe open a tiny recreation of the store, complete with photos & memorabilia, in the future tower(s) that will inevitably replace it.

In the end, it's a shitty novelty store that is occupying way too much space.

I would think a corner lot like that would be worth more than $1 million in Toronto, but I am not familiar with real estate/ land value prices in that area.
