Computer issues

One of my laptops is now running terribly slow and I need some help to get it working again before I throw it over the balcony. One of the major problems it seems is that I have 82 processes running when I look at Windows Task manager (Windows XP). I don't know what most of them are so I have no idea which ones to eliminate. Any cleanup software you guys have used in the past that have worked?

Going to go through and start removing a bunch of junk from my computer now. Hope that helps a little bit. Had the computer since 2005 so I'm sure its got some serious internal issues.

I think it was on CNet.com that they had a tutorial that worked pretty good as far as speeding up a computer.

I am tryign to find it but I am failing.

So far I have

-done a system restore back to July
-run "msconfig" and disable some of the processes at startup but did not touch a lot of them because I don't know what they do.
-removed unused programs

Not necessarily. How much memory does it have? If it's 512mb (and I bet that's it), that's just insufficient these days, even for simple Web browsing purposes. You're using it all as soon as you fire up Firefox or else.

Yeah also what kind of processor you got in that thing. Core? Pentium?

Processor doesn't matter nearly as much as the amount of RAM. That'll be his main bottleneck.
