You can always unscrew the deck boards around the tree and enlarge the opening as needed with a jigsaw.

well my primary goal was to leave enough to sweep dirt into the opening yet too small for squirrels, aka fucking tree rats, to be able to run up the tree from down below. my dad and stepmom were her a few years back and we were on the deck enjoying a nice adult beverage. a tree rat scurried up the tree from below the deck and damn near gave my stepmom a heart attack.

wish i'd measured the tree when we moved in nine years ago. the circumference at the deck is 31-7/8" right now, so we'll see how much she grows in the next 12 months.

I'd imagine it'd take alot yrs before there was a chance of the tree growing that much to cause a problem
