I would like to start a bit of a database to see what kind of musical talent we have here at Gamelive.
I'll get it started. I love playing music but am not by any means an amazing musician. I started playing guitar when I was 15 and I have never had a single music lesson. I own more than a dozen different stringed instruments now and several amplifiers and have a full drum kit in my cabin living room. I have never 'gigged' or played for more than a dozen or two people at campfire parties etc.
I prefer playing acoustic guitar to electric but that doesn't stop me from rocking out on occasion. I would describe myself as a decent campfire guitar player but I need to learn more complete songs. 'Storytelling' songs a la Johnny Cash, Stomping Tom, John Prine and Neil Young is something that I would love to be really good at, not widdly-widdly guitar.
I am a terrible lead player and am working a bit on fixing this.
I like playing blues guitar but like playing raw-er blues like RL Burnside and Seasick Steve play. I believe the style I like is called Mississippi Hill Country Blues.
I also love Bluegrass music. This is NOT what they call 'Country' these days. Some newer bands in this form I enjoy are The Grascals, Trampled By Turtles and The Infamous Stringdusters.
On top of some guitar, I can play 5 string banjo, blues harmonica and can hack out a few drum beats and bass riffs.
At this point, my wishlist would include learning some mandolin and/or fiddle (they are tuned exactly the same) so if you start on mandolin it is supposed to help you out with violin/fiddle.
My goal this year is to be able to take a few banjo workshops/lessons and get my playing to a point where I could play more with other people and not just by myself. It would be amazing to get to the point where I could jump in with another band and play a few songs live on the old banjo.
I can't wait to see who else here has ever played music. I know Matty, Reno and Muddy play.
You can include playing piano or violin or any other early music lessons.. I just remembered that I took trumpet for a year in high school.
