Need a new camera of some sort. Can't decide if I should just go balls to the wall and drop ~500 on DSLR or if I should just get a $100 compact/point and shoot. I realize that the DSLR will be a pain to carry but will give me better quality. I guess in a perferct world I have both, the DSLR for really specialized locations, action etc. and the compact for social events, dont wanna carry a big camera.

Discuss.

I have a Canon PowerShot A430. 4.0 Megapixels, it says. If memory serves, it was about $200 (??)

It would fall in the category of little, simple camera. I take a few stills. I replaced the memory card and I can do my little YouTube vids. That's all I want and need.

It serves my modest purposes.

Boner - for social occasions you'll want a decent flash. It's more important than the camera. If I were you I would get the small Nikon D3200 with an SB-400 flash. Tilt the flash towards the ceiling and voila, you're suddenly the best party photographer in the room and every needy bitch wants you to take a pic of their good profile.

Then an iPhone with an olloclip will work wonders. The iPhone camera is more camera than anyone needs when shooting in broad daylight.

The olloclip adds fisheye, wide-angle and unbelievably close macro capability for 69 dollorz. Best Christmas gift ever.

Boner should still entertain the idea of buying a used iPhone 4 if only to use it as a pocketable camera. I use Mrs. Durito's old Colombian iPhone 4S for such purposes, never as a phone.

The instant upload to iCloud is useful as fok.
