Mosquitoes are one of the few annoying drawbacks to the summer season but this year it could get worse in Florida as a new species gets ready to dominate the state. Scientists at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Science's say the new species, known as gallinippers, can measure up to 20 times the size of a common mosquito.

Last year after tropical storms like Debby, millions of eggs were laid, ready for the warm, moist summer this year.
Gallinippers are about the size of an American quarter and their bite has been compared to "being knifed".

Very scary RJ! So what's your educated guess on chances of getting knifed in FLA >=< Camden?

Might sound crazy but NJ in the summer has way too many of them around even during daylight hours! Was for many years just bad in the evening! Mayor of town said with shortage of funds the county stopped spraying along with the people fear the environmental concerns with it!

In FLA last October and we experienced lot less bugs around! Neighbors say they continue to spray down there!

There's a couple towns that are really bad in sofla. Haitian area in West Palm, little Haiti, little Havana, general negro areas Overtown, Liberty City in Miami, a Mexican/Crackas area in Homestead. I still say Camden beats them all.

The size of the mosquito doesn't equate to it's potential for health related issues. Actually for humans the larger the mosquito the better simply because you will feel/notice it sooner and swat at it more noticeably than the much smaller ones. Carriers are carriers regardless of their overall size.

Besides if you've ever played St John's Public Golf Course and strayed off the fairway to even 5 feet into the woods you've already encountered mosquitos that make that gallinipper look small.

Coastal residence already have to deal with horseflies and sand gnats on top of the normal run of indigenous species of mosquitos and the bites from the horseflies and sand gnats are much more painful/noticeable anyways.

Bring on the new breed of mosquito I say. I don't get paid anymore or less regardless.
