Very encouraging, but not a breakthrough. FWIW non verbal ALS patients have been typing with micromovements to communicate for at least 20 years now. Think Hawking. I had an uncle who "typed" with just his eyeballs. This just picks up signals (synapse) one step earlier in the chain which will allow comms from further "gone" patients.
