Progressively heavier trains shuttled back and forth across the bridge as its engineer, James B. Eads, took meticulous measurements. However, the general public was probably more reassured by a nonscientific test. Everyone knew that elephants had canny instincts and would not set foot on an unsound bridge. The crowd cheered as a great beast from a local menagerie mounted the approach without hesitation and lumbered placidly across to the Illinois side.
