Yes they do have shootouts in the playoffs. The rules change slightly with more time 4 on 4, but the shootout is still the final endgame.

Finland looks like they are hoping to play tie games and presumably win in shootouts all the way to the gold medal. Do they have particularly good penalty shot guys? Dunno.

Doesn't strike me as a recipe for success but their chances are better than, you know, Austria or whatever.

So one guy can decide if you win the Gold medal? The field goal kicker of hockey! I like the USA's chances!

Oshie smiling after a miss against Russia seem to be having fun feeling no pressure! I mean damn going what 4-6 wuth them and the 2 misses could have been easy goals with some patience!

The guy doing well off the ice too! I see absolutely nothing wrong this gal! Zero! nada!

Rules for tie games go like this:

Preliminary round: Five-minute 4-on-4 sudden death overtime, shootout

Playoff rounds (qualifications round, quarterfinals, semifinals, bronze medal): 10-minute 4-on-4 sudden death overtime, shootout

Gold medal game: 20-minute 4-on-4 sudden death overtime, shootout

4 on 4 of course refers to the number of skaters and not the goalie.

IMO going 4-on-4 for even 10 minutes will produce a goal! Wonder if you could find a book giving out Y/N bet odds on that?

Sidenote question, how much extra room is there behind the goalie net for international hockey? I liked that it appeared in the USA/Russia game goaltenders rarely get involved in going after the puck which seems to make for less stoppages!

I don't think there' s a shootout in the gold medal game.

Where did you get that from?

Disappointed in the overall quality of play.

Russia about what I expected.
Swedes look tedious, maybe too many injuries.
Finland I had hopes for doing some special stuff are only showing very brief moments of brilliance.
Czech/Slovaks are bloody awful.
Switzerland/ Norway aren't making any noise like they have in the past.
I guess the US and Slovenia are the only ones who look better than expected. :dunno:

Pucky, maybe you can address this. The European teams including Russia can obviously skate/handle the puck. Why do they all refuse (except for brief moments) to cycle at center ice or in their own zone while looking for an opening to enter the zone? They seem to mostly stand there looking for a home run pass. Or one guy goes in on 5 with no chance. Or they dump the puck and only weakly pursue. Its hard to watch, and you would think these guys are capable of so much more. Are they so afraid of making a mistake and giving up a scoring chance that they refuse to take any chances? This is miserable style of play.

Si, Amigo!!!

Will be interesting times in the Kings dressing room when they return, but of course we all know what Quick did. To call your own teammate out like that is pretty bad though.

At the end of the day, I think you guys care way more about this than they do. They will go back to being professional athletes when this is over.

It's the wide ice. Teams, even Canada cannot afford to make a mistake in the wide neutral zone. Canada's D is HUGE, but very mobile. The Finns were 100% looking for Canada to make a mistake in the neutral zone, but they didn't. Their only goal in the offensive zone was just a typical hockey play. One got through with luck. Finland only had I think 14 shots on goal the entire game. If it wasn't for Finland's D and Rask the game would have been a massive blowout.

I think all teams are afraid to make mistakes on the larger ice surface especially as I said the neutral zone.
