I did my test on a CBR250, good bike to learn on, very easy to throw around, but I would never buy that. Way too slow.

ZX-7R is a bit much but manageable. Might not be the best bike to get tested on though.

Get an older Japanese 600 by any of the big 4.

I would not buy those 500's either. The 500 class was always marketed to beginners, so the engines tend to be detuned and/or significantly less powerful than the 600's.

Also, 600's can easily be resold. It's the sweet spot between beginner and intermediate bikes. Much bigger target audience.

Ima buy one of those as my 2nd bike. I looooove the old CB750's. The quintessential motorcycle.

Can't you sign up for a proper class where you get to ride the school's bikes?

I would recommend getting a bike and practicing by yourself in a parking lot, then in traffic, before you even take the class. Learning to ride is all instinct that you pick up over time. Maximize your seat time.

I put about 750kms on my bike before the class. Test was ridiculously easy.

Well Blitty you can't have your cake and eat it too. First you say you want an motorcycle to ride west on Route 66. You need a really good bike with great suspension and storage for riding long hours. Then you say you want an easy bike to pass the test first. So basically you need two bikes.

For the bike test buy an old Kawasaki Ninja 250. The older the better. You can get one for less that 2K. So if you drop it, which you will during training, you won't have to cry day and night. Easy bike to ride goes only up to 100 mph on a good day.

Now for the trip to West you need a Sports Touring Bike like a BMW or a Ducati or even a Suzuki or Honda. When you are ready to buy I can help you choose but first get the Ninja so you can learn how to ride before it freezes in NYC.

+1 on the Ninja 250. Easily my favorite bike among those I got to ride during the class. It feels substantial and refined and is bigger than the Honda CBR250, which is too small for me.

You're gonna get rid of it in a couple months though. It's pretty slow.

I would never get a crotch rocket for longer rides. Death bikes. I have been riding Goldwings for 30+ years and love them. Might be a bit big for you to start on but in the end you will love the larger touring bikes. Smooth and quiet and can easily fit 2 people on them.
