A Miami police officer who recently resigned while under investigation surrendered to authorities Thursday on criminal charges stemming from an FBI investigation. He became the second officer charged with involvement in an alleged protection racket for a sports-betting ring operating out of a Liberty City barbershop.

Harold James, an eight-year veteran, is charged with two counts of extortion involving providing protection for the cashing of fraudulent checks in exchange for cash payments, according to court records.

He is scheduled to make his first appearance in federal court Thursday afternoon. Prosecutors are seeking to seize $800 from James that they say he pocketed from the alleged protection racket in 2012.

Is this a joke? Or are there some 00's missing?

Racketeering----you're doing it wrong Officer James

No, $800 that's it. Lol.

Interesting though that the FBI was investigating this. If they were after drugs shouldn't it have been the DEA? If they suspected the cop shouldn't it have been internal affairs? Unless DEA passed on the case to the Feds once they discover what was happening at the shop and the FBI just pulled the trigger right away, and getting officer James on record for that small sum not bothering with that crap. Very strange, FBI don't bother with little gambling shit holes like that.

yep, odd to hear of FBI getting involved w/ small time case.
got to be more to the story though.

or does FBI stand for: Florida Bureau of Investigations???
that seems more likely.

almost sure that any crimes or corruption w/ law enforcement I've heard of around hear is investigated by the GBI
Georgia Bureau of Investigations.

Internal Affairs does not do criminal investigations

They do internal investigations and hand down administrative penalties (demotion, unpaid leave etc).

The State Attorneys Office Public Corruption Unit handles the criminal aspect

FBI most likely involved because of the public corruption aspect

I'm glad this cop resigned. We don't bribed cops on the streets.

still seems like it would be better than getting picked up by this task force...
