Going back and reviewing this thread, I see it has not gone well for me. No I don't know that. I tend to have spasms where I make willy nilly use of dashes but I don't pretend it follows any particular rules of anything.

I use two lengths of dash, no more. That kind of subtlety is lost on 99.99999999% of the population anyway.
