DETROIT - In the summer, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren gambled by giving free-agent right winger Jaromir Jagr a $3.3 million, one-year contract - outbidding Pittsburgh and Detroit - and hoping the future Hall of Famer could still be productive at age 39.

So far, so good.

In his Flyers debut Friday night, Jagr had a goal and an assist in the opening period, sparking the Flyers to a 3-1 exhibition win over the Detroit Red Wings at the Joe Louis Arena.

Coach Peter Laviolette gave Jagr high praise for the way he "fit into the system," but the veteran winger said he did "worse" than he expected and that his timing needs work.

Flyers have gotten enough over-the-hill guys over the years with the lightening in the bottle strategy that never panned out. Hopefully this man will change that in 2012!

Horrible comparison. Very ignorant.

In mlb terms, to help you understand: Jagr is more like the equivalent of a Jose Canseco in his prime.

I am no doubt extremely ignorant when it comes to hockey, Refined Blitty.

But I still LOL'd that he's coming back to play.

I need to cherish the seldom moments when I can laugh out loud these days.

Dear Dafty,

JJ played last 3 years in KHL and averaged almost a point a game! Yes, I agree you are very ignorant in regards to hockey!

Willie Mays was my first fav player as a boy! Sadly Willie overstayed in the game (1973 Mets player) but bad comparison!

I also agree get all your giggles in before Saturday before the crocodile tears begin to fall!

Of course there's no crying in baseball but if it makes you happy, no reason you can't be the exception to the rule!

As bizarre as it is Jagr will fit into our system just fine.

Worried about our "new stud" goalie though.

Look at our goalies in recent years? Always among the top 10 or so in GAA then shit the bed int he playoffs.

That's what he's famous for from his time in the desert.
