No joke. It happened last night. I am dealing with some minor injuries today. Here's the story:

I was riding home from my addictions recovery meeting. Road conditions were wet.

On my route there is a level railway crossing with 3 tracks. It is at a point where I also need to cross the road and there was no one in any direction so I (stupidly) decided to cross the road at the tracks. In other words, I rode between the tracks crossing the road. But I also needed to cross the tracks so I was crossing them at an angle as I was going along.

Perhaps you can already guess the problem. I tried to cross one track but it was not enough of an angle and it was wet and my bike tires slipped right in the groove and BAM!

Man you go down fast. I got my hands out but I still smacked my head.

Fortunately, I did not lose consciousness. I have a very hard head. I got the hell off the tracks and sat on a parking block by the edge of the road. I felt very nauseous and had to give that some time to pass. I was able to assess that there were no broken bones. At that point, a couple of cops came by and saw me and stopped. There was really nothing for them to do. They asked the predictable questions and I told them what happened. They were very nice and professional.

Eventually the nausea passed and I rode the rest of the way home.

Current injuries:

- Bump with abrasion on my left cheekbone. I could post a pic but there is not much to see really.
- Left wrist very sore - there won't be any guitar playing for a few days.
- Right elbow sore and can't be completely straightened.
- Big sore bump/bruise on my left quadriceps. I don't know what happened there. Feels like something stiff must have been driven right it into it (a pedal?)

So that's the story. Since no one actually witnessed the event, this seemed like the best way to embarrass myself.

I feel old. I have never worn a bicycle helmet but, even though I doubt it would have done much in this case, I think I'm going to start.

Man you go down fast. It's like there is no time between having the thought, 'Shoot, my tire is slipping,' and your face bouncing off the pavement. I feel old.

ps. cheekbone pic please

Okay but I was not kidding when I said there is not much to see.

Here is a picture of the old dude. If you look really close, you may also see very minor abrasions on the left upper lip and chin. (My walker is just out of frame).

Here I am suspiciously eyeballing the perfectly good bicycle helmet I was given some time ago but have never used except for zany photography.

Wow. Suddenly that helmet thread seems not-as-funny. But, almost any excuse for more Mudcat pics is worth it. Your scratches are much more visible than Steves'.

Some bike falls take forever before you hit the ground. Like enough time to think about everything that lead up to it, what you might have done differently, better things you could have done with your day, etc. But yeah, those ones were your front tire slips to the side are instant and awkwardly dangerous.
