So the Kings are 32-26-19 and are in the last wildcard spot in the West right now. They went to overtime 32 times, have won 8 in OT and 5 more in SO, and they've accumulated 19 "loser points" for losing after regulation.
The Sharks have 5 more wins than the Kings (37-32-7) and the Preds 4 more (36-31-10) but they're both out of a playoff spot because of the extreme number of loser points the Kings have.
If we stopped rewarding OT games so much and instead distributed 3 points every game (3 for a regulation win, 2 for an overtime/shootout win, 1 for an overtime/shootout loss, 0 for a regulation loss), Preds and Sharks would be tied at 118 points and Kings would be behind with 115 points. Which is exactly where they should be.
