...it's been a tough return home from my trip to vegas, and i'm not referring to the approximate $3.78 i figured up i missed out on in discounts at von's deli where i spent more time than at a casino.

background: it was 110, 110 and 112 the last three full days i spent in las vegas. came home saturday, got drunk, ofifishally got to know the missus again, all that rot. sunday it was 110 here, and again today. not asking any of you to feel sorry for me about this, especially with so many dealing with crap from irene. and trust me, you'll need your sympathy glands for later.

the story: out and about on the property sunday around noon, i kept getting the distinct whiff of a skunk. we see them occasionally, but we've also had a couple already come up and die here so we've dealt with this before. when they're sick and about to cash in, they will spray the area to keep predators away, you know, just in case they pull through.

i never find the critter or any real signs, but i do notice when the late afternoon heat is at its peak one of our original 5 fawns is struggling. the mom quit showing up about two weeks ago, never found her, and this one became the runt of what we think of as our doe herd.

the fawn was still looking pretty weak this morning, but it ate a little, i saw it drink and then the group moved on. they don't travel more than 80 yards right now in any direction for two reasons: 1) there's no grass anywhere for them to eat, and; 2) all wildlife right now around here is fighting hunger. i went out just before noon to look around the place and found both the skunk and the little runt fawn both down.

and that got me thinking about the pets that have been displaced due to the hurricane, yadda-yadda-yadda, please contribute if you can to your local no-kill shelters.

I've recently stepped forward towards my full acceptance of an alley cat that I named

Milk Hands

its been very rewarding on my end.

I don't think she much cares, she's just here for the pulled pork, tuna and milk

recently discovered a HUGH owl living in a tree beside my house, actually my neighbor informed about it.
she said it screeches at night instead of howling or whatever they do....

anyway she comes knocking on my door at about 10PM the other night ( me thinking its the cops...cause nobody knocks on my door at that hour)
to prove theres an owl...'yep a HUGH fuking owl, about 3' tall with a wing span of probally 6' or so
pretty cool, never seen an owl in the wild or 1 that big anywhere

but I've never heard it and it lives in a tree right beside the house:excl:

now just waiting for it to take off with the cat

This is a good reminder of why I'd probably never do well living out in the wilderness although I like to think I'd love it. For some reason animals dying in this way is much more sad to me than when they're hit by motorists. I'd be crushed if I stumbled across a dead fawn on my property.

Hope it cools down soon for you and your furry friends, BB.

i get torn in all of this being raised a city boy but still having so much contact throughout the years via my grandfather's ranch and living out in the sticks when i could in large metropolitan areas. right now, we're pretty much stretched on how much i can spend to feed/water the crew that comes through here. queen bee went through about $130 worth of feed in the week that i was in vegas.

the sad part is it could be brutal this fall and winter, especially if we get an early freeze or prolonged 25-30 periods. birds and tree rats have already gone through the acorn buds.

buy beef right now, freeze/vacuum pack it for when prices go way up in 2012-13...the preceding farm futures report brought to you by fishhead.
