I was browsing this morning and read a BeanTownJim thread about the pending champions parade about to happen in Boston. He was ranting about how every cop on the force will be out and paid overtime in most cases providing security for the Bruins parade.

Now I'm not a huge Beener supporter and obviously security for something like this is now only justified would be a necessity due to how things could potentially get out of hand. So to is justification for the police officers not scheduled for duty to be compensated accordingly.

Beener's gripe and valid point was as a tax payer his taxes would ultimately be paying for this.

Obviously our taxes fund city, county, state and federal services and most will agree that there are more than just a few abuses to the system.

In such volatile economical times how can our civic leaders justify spending monies on celebrations like this without the slightest consideration?

Sure teams that win championships should be celebrated but who should be financing those celebrations?

Mark Cuban announced that he would pay for the Mavericks parade out of his own pocket because it wasn't right for Dallas to have to foot the bill.

Should something like this be put on local ballots? Something like, "if (whatever local team) wins a championship would you be willing to be assessed and taxed accordingly to fund the celebration activities?

Naturally something like that would never be put on a ballot and even if it was and received voters approval it would open the flood gates for further abuse but the point is, shouldn't the tax payees have a say in something of this nature?

Interesting points, Wally.

I don't care about sports parades, so whatever. I do enjoy a good gay parade, though. So does Fiver.

Hey! Who is paying for these gay parades btw??!?

its a drop in the bucket

the taxes are paid anyways. its not like they are gonna ask people to put up an extra 5 bucks. If it didn't go police overtime, It would go to some silly nigga welfare program. I'm sure BTJ would love that.

I'm sure the stimulus of all the fans coming into the city from outlaying suburbs and spending their $ there that day offsets the problem anyways.

don't begrudge your sports teams in a city on a tiny bit of money. They bring in tons of tourist $ and tons more in social equity and publicity.

In pittsburgh I know the taxpayers actually paid for a significant portion of PNC park. now there is an issue to talk about

Valid points Arch and I understand that there is far more money wasted in other areas of local state and federal governments but in such difficult economic times doesn't celebrations seem asinine?

Your point about the economic surge during the celebration period with food and merchandise is also valid but those clerks selling the food and merchandise aren't being compensated extra dollars during those times and far more of them pay taxes than the owners they work for. My point is while some prosper many, many more foot the bill.

I realize what I said there is the case with practically every aspect of life but in this case the bill being footed by the masses isn't something that can be deemed as socially viable on a humanitarian level like welfare it's just a "look at us" party.

it doesn't seem right to be spending tax dollars for a party when most municipalities are operating in the red and can't find the money to pay for upgrades to sewer systems, laying off teachers, etc. but then, that's up to the people of boston to decide since they elected the mayor/city manager and councils who ok'd this.

no way for me to know this for sure, but i'd still lay 20:1 that beantownjim isn't even registered to vote, and certainly couldn't name half of the city council that his real gripe sits with.

trickle down economics. and the $ being spent at the celebration will be "TAXED". hell even the ot the popo gets will be taxed

it pays for itself. and like I said, grand scheme? drop in the bucket

There's your trouble right there.

I am okay with using tax dollars for these celebrations. It is so rare and I really do think there is something to be said for community spirit and just letting people feel good. Not everything comes down to how it looks on an accountant's ledger. Work to live, don't live to work. It is a time to live it up!

And maybe the economics actually do work out in the big picture. Probably. I don't know. Either way I say, celebrate. Be happy.

Cudos to Mark Cuban though.
