Aside from the fact that 2010 was by far his best season for the Tigers so it actually comes as a bit of a surprise, the question is still - what the heck happened to the kid? Although it's hard to have sympathy for someone being really bad for such a long period and pocketing $30+ million over his career.

He has some mental illnesses...doesn't like the attention and didn't like the pressures that came with the money that he got.

"Mental issues" are an incorrect modern diagnosis for a lot of things. I think he just lost "it" - and he wasn't the first person to have it happen and he sure won't be the last. The subsequent "mental issues" are as a result of him losing "it" rather than causing him to lose "it". In my opinion, obviously.

Who knows? He'll probably float around a bit, then somewhere down the line he'll have a hot streak for a few months and some short-sighted GM will throw another 30 million at him. Then he'll revert to his recent form.

Circle of life.

Assuming he clears waivers and such (which I'm sure he will - I mean who will trade for him, seriously?) someone will pick him up for the rest of the season guaranteed since it will only cost the team the pro rata MLB minimum salary. I doubt he'll ever see $30 million again and especially not in that short of a time period, though - the 2008 Tigers are a model by which no-one should ever run a baseball franchise.

Lefties are hitting .224/.309/.327 off him this season and .206/.282/.289 career

Even in his pretty awful 2007 season for us, they hit .123/.215/.142 (!) off of him

It's pretty clear what needs to happen with him now...........Lefty on lefty specialist.

The fan in me would like to think so Tully but his control is so unpredictable. He actually had a few good starts this year.

At worst though he will get picked up as a lefty specialist.

I just think there is such a difference between pitching in the AL and NL. John Smoltz is another example from last year. If I was an NL GM and I could get Willis at the major league minimum I would give him a shot a starting.

And off to Arizona he goes, traded for Billy Buckner (a 26 year old pitcher who pretty much stinks) as well as cash considerations, I'm assuming that the Tigers are paying the majority of his 2010 salary. Will be interesting to see how he fairs in a weak NL division.

MLB Network just showed a graph of Willis' wins by year. Really MLBNet? You guys are still stuck on caveman stats like wins?

I'm glad Willis got picked up and I hope they put him in a LOOGY role where he can thrive.
