Doctor Who - is this something I need to watch?

I have looked at the Wikipedia page so I have some idea what's going on. But is it good? Is it the kind of thing you can just start watching at any point? I guess you would have to considering there has been 26 seasons of it.

Is it comparable to anything? I like some science fiction. But not all.

I take it you're talking old school Dr. Who? I watched here and there when I was a kid, but don't really have a desire to revisit. We watched about the first three seasons of the new one. I don't know why we stopped. It's good, but I would recommend other things first if you like Sci Fi. My favorites in no particular order: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica (new school). Caprica looks really good but we're waiting for it to finish so we can watch it all at once.

Yes you can pretty much watch at any point - the only recurring theme are the various monsters that he keeps meeting again and again. It's essentially a kids show (or probably more accurately a family show) so it's not that complex or dark and the special effects are a bit dodgy but it's certainly not something anyone would hate watching.

Guilty pleasure that I don't admit too often... but we're among pals here, so I assume that my manhood won't be questioned if I say that Buffy, Xander et al. had some of the bestest dialogue in the history of television.

My thoughts exactly. I saw the pilot and meant to keep watching but lost track of it so now I am just going to wait for the DVD's.

I looked around and noticed that they showed one (in the UK) last night starring the Daleks which of course are the Doctor's best enemy. I will download, watch and review accordingly.

I grew up watching the old 80's runs of the show. Can remember when was about 5yo walking arond the house like a zombie yelling 'exterminate', 'exterminate' aka the daleks ...In my biased eyes a classic show

I hated watching it cause my brother would turn it on when the Pink Panther was on.
