I have always been very in favor letting persons have control of their death. I see no point in forcing chronically ill persons to linger on in pain or mental torture against their wishes.

There are a couple of valid con reasons including ones tied to religion. For example, my mother who desperately wants to die, would never participate in such thing because of her Christian beliefs..but that should be a personal decision between a person and his or her God if he or she has a belief system.

I would assume since the great majority of you are atheists/agnostics, you are probably ok with it as well, although I know there are other (non religious based ) sound arguments against it. I read some of them many months ago...one tied to the mental capacity of some to make sound decisions, but I think overall the pros outweigh the cons if it is administered correctly.

I think there are 3 states in the U.S. that provide for some type of assisted suicide.

What say you?

:clueless: I can think of only 3 posters who have come out as such - Fu Manchu (RIP), Mudcat and myself.

I'm all for assisted suicide in cases where the person is lucid enough to make the call, and/or has properly given power of attorney to a lucid relative.

In someones case such as your mother, I say it's fine. It would be selfish of us capable people to keep them around just because we don't want to lose them.

I can understand why people would be against it though. It's each persons life though, and so the choice should be theirs, though I am sure plenty of people will argue that perhaps some aren't mentally stable enough to make this choice for themselves.

Mr. X, Reno, RayRay....there are more but those just off top of my head... There are many more though...I remember reading the various atheist/Do you believe in God? threads and noticing this.

I guess the question is where to draw the line. I wish I could remember more of the debate that went on when Vermont legalized it. I guess I will read up on it later if I have the motivation.

Yes. Only in an advanced society is state sponsored suicide allowed. The American elites who oppose it are members of the pharma-industrial complex that derives monetary benefit from long periods of over-medication and supposed "treatments" that "improve" quality of life.

yes, I'd say suicide at 1st opportunity.

the only legit reason to not allow it is that people will take advantage of any law to make $. So now greedy children might convince their parents to kill themselves. Or maybe some company will have a vested interest in somebody's death. Maybe the reverse mortgage people :dunno: That's a problem, it is America.

sucks that your mom wants to die iag :console:

Matty, most people here are atheists even if they don't call themselves that :common:

Yap.

Or maybe some company will have a vested interest in somebody's death.

Yap. That's already the case.
