slavery goes far beyond 1000 years. And it involves multiple races being enslaved and pretty much every major civilization since the beginning of time. So wouldn't that mean that since basically everyone could trace their own roots back to slave owners and slaves that that would cancel out any sort of payment?

That race has darker skin than most other races but that's the only difference. We all breathe the same air, bleed if cut, fall in love, have broken hearts, have dreams of better things and laugh at funny stuff.

People tend to misunderstand the significance of slavery in this country, reparations etc..
At this point its not about punishing anybody or burdening poor whites. It is about understanding the effects of slavery and discrimination on the situation of poverty we have today. And its about taking steps to alleviate the problems which exist today that are direct cause of past injustice.
 
I had a few ancestors who owned slaves. I had some that were indentured servants, which was basically slaves with a fancy title. I also had one that came over to the US cause he was a horse thief. I don't feel I owe anyone anything because some had slaves. I don't feel like I am owed anything because they were indentured servants. I don't feel like I owe anyone a horse either.

I also had one who has a city in GA named for him, plus was deeded quite a bit of land in what is now Cobb County, GA. I don't feel like I can claim that either.

This country's history with slaves isn't any worse than others is my point. Should Egyptians owe Jewish people for building the pyramids? Most slaves traded in this country were sold into slavery originally by people in their native country. So who is worse? The ones who bought or the ones who captured and sold in the first place?
 
The society/country as a whole is who's responsible for reparations. That is the community/government or the wealthy who benefit by the system which enslaved. It is not the responsibility of simple poor whites who are more or less victims themselves.

This is a discussion of what is to be done in the US in view of its history and current situation. It has nothing to do with whatever problems exist in Nigeria,

But the situation of black slavery here is pretty unique. You had people taken from a different continent and brought over and sold. And relatively speaking it was a recent event. Then after slavery was abolished you had many years of segregation and racism.

In Russia for example, they had serfdom which was abolished a few years before slavery in the US. But since the serfs were basically local farmers afterwards they were just given some land to keep farming. Very different situation.
 
Native Americans also had slaves. So did the natives and French in Canada. I agree what went on was horrendous. But was it any worse than how those pyramids got built? Well besides being more recent. Although pretty sure that most Egyptians still don't care much for the Jewish race and still treat them pretty poorly. Look at the reports of the leaflets that were passed out in East Ukraine telling Jewish people that they needed to "register" with the Donetsk government. That is way more current. Where is the outrage on their behalf?

Plus, using your argument, we have no control on what happened in the past either. I can't go back and change anything. So why should I be held responsible?
 
People suck. You will always have some that feel superior to others for reasons of their own making. But all I am responsible for is how I treat people. I think the world would be a lot better if we all just treated others with respect and how you yourself would want to be treated.

It wasn't always that way of course. Back in the day you had The Three Stooges (RIP), who were very funny Jews.
 
How are the black people in Jamaica or Haiti doing now that they have kicked the whites out of their countries? They are still poor like the blacks in the USA and all own land. So it's not a matter of the US government giving blacks land. Even if they give them money now as reparations they will all burn it in a few years on Nike basketball shoes and FUBU clothes and be poor again. Very view will invest the money to start their own legal businesses.
