So Canada has a transfer payment system where the richest provinces send money to the poorest ones to equalize shit. Alberta has been the largest oil producer over the last several decades and thus have had the highest GDP per capita. It wasn't always the case but it has been for a while now, and Albertans are getting sick of it. It's all a bit short-sighted but you can't really blame them for being pissed at Quebec, for example, who uses that money to pay for fairly lavish social programs like $7-a-day childcare.
Ironically, Quebec's independence movement is also gaining steam again. How they would make that happen and not cripple their standard of living is a mystery.
