I was not particularly emotional about that trade, no. I had long since become jaded about goings on in professional sports.
As for the Canada angle, Gretzky has continued to do great service for Canada. He won another Canada Cup gold medal after that as a player and was a huge contributor as GM to the 2002 Olympic gold medal team. Although I don't believe he was involved in the gold medal team in 2010 Vancouver, he was a very active participant in the opening ceremonies.
Great Canadian. Closest thing to a hero I have.
And by the way, as a player,
Gretzky >>>> Lemieux and Orr (and Jordan and Jim Brown and anyone else you can name in any sport in my lifetime). His state of being astronomically head and shoulders above every superstar of his era - and there were some great ones - was so routine that people actually get blase about it and try to draw others into the comparison.
