I was not particularly emotional about that trade, no. I had long since become jaded about goings on in professional sports.

As for the Canada angle, Gretzky has continued to do great service for Canada. He won another Canada Cup gold medal after that as a player and was a huge contributor as GM to the 2002 Olympic gold medal team. Although I don't believe he was involved in the gold medal team in 2010 Vancouver, he was a very active participant in the opening ceremonies.

Great Canadian. Closest thing to a hero I have.



And by the way, as a player,

Gretzky >>>> Lemieux and Orr (and Jordan and Jim Brown and anyone else you can name in any sport in my lifetime). His state of being astronomically head and shoulders above every superstar of his era - and there were some great ones - was so routine that people actually get blase about it and try to draw others into the comparison.

No one compares.

Except for the fact that he consistently outscored mere superstars 2 to 1, nothing at all.

Gretzky didn't change anything cause no one can replicate what he did. He studied the game to perfection, like a fokken chess grand master.

Not a real Canadian my ass. Even though it was typed you could actually hear your voice cracking with pride as you wrote that.
 
Zero national pride vis-a-vis Gretzky. I didn't even grasp the fact that these players were from different countries when I was little. There were Quebecers playing against aliens.

Due to my age and geographical location Gretzky made a huge impact on my life. The name alone is very magical and powerful. The Great One.

Earliest memories include long late night drives to the Great Western Forum in Inglewood. That's where I saw my first black person. It was scary.

I was too young to understand why he was so special but knew he was a god among men. That #99 was powerful.

We would watch life-long documentaries on him during breaks at hockey camp. He seemed so talented and passionate at like 10 years old, almost how I feel now...Back then I just wanted to sleep in, eat pizza, and play video games. He was so mature at a young age.

The uproar over the 93 finals in LA, the Anaheim Ducks, and the Phoenix coyotes are all direct correlations from him. As well as the 5-6 instead of 1-2 local rinks near me.
 
He badically established/perfected the Gretzky zone, by using the space behind net to set up plays. Completely unselfish playmaker. So rare to find these days.

Guys like Kurri, Coffey, Robitaiile, and even McSorley are very important factors to his success as well.

I doubt that's the case. McSorley was a bum. The only reason he played in the NHL is because he was a great fighter who protected Gretzky.

Coffey was an offensive minded dman and was brutal defensively. Kurri was a well established player in his Finland days, but his point totals in the NHL were padded because he played with Gretzky. Luke Robitaille..... same thing. Go look at his Jr. Numbers when he played with Hull. He was a killer Jr. player but with those point totals he was drafted in the 9th round. Don't get me wrong. Luc was a good player on his own, but Gretzky made those players who they are now. Those players played ZERO role in his success in the NHL. Gretzky dominated hockey since he was 5 years old until old age caught up to him and he was slow as molasses in the final year in the NHL.

Remember, Gretzky had 163 assists in the NHL one season. That's insane!!! He had 11 straight 100+ assist seasons. NUTS!!!

Pucky if you weren't so obsessed with Blitty's stick length (homo) you'd be able to pay more attention to his posts.

You're being a bit harsh on Kurri and Robitaille - obviously their numbers were through the roof with a passer like Gretzky, but they were still top-notch players on their own. Kurri had 2 more great seasons after Gretzky left and Robitaille had 3 seasons of 39, 37 and 36 goals (1998/99 to 2000/01), while scoring was waaaayy down in the league.
