I feel like I should know the answer to this but I don't.

Actually I think I do know - and the answer is no - but I don't understand why.

In this day and age we have spam filters on our email and ignore lists on our internet forums and television recording devices so we never have to watch a TV commercial. We live in a wonderful age where pointless/obnoxious noise can be tidily pre-squelched as if it never happened - so why do I have to get repeated phone calls from tools I never heard of running for municipal alderman?

Why can't I press a button and ---> never again? Or at least have all future calls from that number sent to some spam bucket which I can empty whenever I feel like it.

Or can you?

Land line.

One reason I assume you can't do it is because I occasionally hear talk about no-call lists that people can put telemarketers on. I believe you have to submit the numbers to a central list and then hope they are checking the list and abiding by it. It sounds like a million times the effort of what I do now which is just don't answer calls from numbers I don't know.

If you could just spam-block calls, that whole deal wouldn't be necessary, I don't think.

I am not sure how, but YES. On a cellular device or land line, you should be able to block specific phone numbers, I have even come across numbers that are able to block telemarketers or any unknown number, you get a message to the effect of "so and so does not accept calls from so and so". I would recommend you call your telephone provider and find out how to do so and what options there are.

I'm not sure if you can do this in Canada, but in the USA, you can sign up the DO NOT CALL registry.

No no my dear. You don't put in the telemarketers number, you put in your number, you are registering your number as a do not call number.

Do you have caller id on your phone? If so, should be easy.
There is a way to block x number of calls from a landline (at least in US)...this is usually used for persons you know and you do not with to have their calls go thru for whatever reason.

In the US we also have a National Do Not Call list which pertains to telemarketers. If you call and enter your number on the registry than no company with whom you have not previously done business can call you to solicit. If they do, they can be fined. Like Cami indicated, that is just a matter of you entering YOUR number after calling the registry and somehow the telemarketers get this list and generally abide. I assume they have something similar in Canada.

There is also a land line feature which allows all calls without a proper identification to go thru. Many times these calls are telemarketers, but they can also be from cell phones. The caller will be notified that you are not receiving calls from unidentified numbers, but gives them the option to unblock their # and then you can see who is calling and choose to answer ...or not.

If you are with Bell, it looks like you would have to add Call Screen

What is Call Screen?

Call Screen, part of the Call Privacy package, lets you redirect calls from up to 12 phone numbers to a recording that tells callers you aren't taking calls at this time. Your phone doesn't ring, and the screened caller is unable to leave a message.

To enjoy the convenience of Call Screen, add Call Privacy to your monthly calling features:

it literally cost pennies to get a new number, maybe getting on those list worked at one point when operators needed to be physically here at least for the setup but now everything is done online, aint no one going to be chasing raj in tamil nadu for breaking the rules
