So when the BCS Rankings are released later tonight there will be some serious shaking up in the standings at the top. With both Oregon and Kansas St losing the obvious #1 team in the nation will be Notre Dame. Yes once prominent, recently irrelevant Notre Dame will sit atop the Polls.

Most likely Alabama will move up to #2.

Could Georgia get bumped up to #3, it's highly likely.

Coming in at #4 you would think might be Oregon since their loss was to a ranked team and considering the game went to overtime.

Florida will probably be at #5 even though my Gators have maybe the worst offense in the Top 25. We will come back to Florida in a moment.

#6 gets a bit cloudy. Maybe it will be Kansas St but considering how badly they lost I'm thinking they might fall behind South Carolina and FSU even. They actually could fall as low as #10.




Now here is where it gets CRAZY.


Notre Dame still has a game with overly hyped, embarrassed and deflated USC next week. If the Trojans could somehow win this game the Irish are out of the Title game.

Florida plays FSU next week and while defensively Florida is as good as the best of the best they are miserable on offense. However if the Gators catch a couple of breaks (like they have all season) and pull off the upset of the Seminoles coupled with a doubtful Notre Dame loss the nation could very easily be rewarded with another SEC vs SEC National Title game in Florida vs Alabama/Georgia winner.
 
They went on the road and beat Oklahoma. They won against Stanford but unless you are a devout Irish fan you know it was a controversial call that secured the victory. They beat Michigan St and Michigan and they beat (fortunately) a game Pittsburgh team.

All in all they have done what needed to be done. They aren't flashy but they are defensively solid and have had their share of a couple breaks along the way.

The most impressive thing about their record is not who they beat (with the exception of Oklahoma at Oklahoma) but the fact they played conferences from all the majors except the SEC. Not the best of the best in those conferences but they played them.
 
You didn't really answer the question in a way I can sink my teeth into. From my meager knowledge, I don't think there are any top 10 teams you mentioned there. No SEC teams. Would I be correct to infer their schedule has been on the soft side? Like on a scale of 1 -10 where 10 is the most difficult, would they be about a 4?
 
I'm not sure the answer you seek is something anyone but yourself could answer Muddy. What I mean is it's kind of subjective just like the human polls.

Strength of schedule based on ranked teams is certainly not as high. Like the Boise St teams of past though this Irish team has gone and played and what's more they have won. I'm not defending them here but their record is 11-0 and it's not against teams like Wofford, Alabama St and The Citadel.
 
There is a reason they have computers figuring out this stuff Wally. We the average college football lover are too dumb to figure it out ourselves. Whoever goes is going to have at least one loss and whoever they chose there will be talking for about a month on talk shows. I hate this part.
 
You seem very defensive here Wal. It feels like you are working harder to justify your position in some argument I had nothing to do with than answer my question.


I'll try one more time and if it seems too painful I will let you off the hook - although of course anyone else is welcome to chime in.

In your opinion, what would you call Notre Dame's strength of schedule on a scale of 1 - 10, with 10 being the most difficult.

I would say this Mudcat. If Notre Dame had LSU's schedule they would have at least 3 losses if not more. LSU had the toughest schedule in all college football this year. They played two 10-1 teams two 9-2 teams one 8-3 and one 7-4 team.

Looking back now, Stanford and OU were huge wins. Bama and ND both beat Mich and is a very good win for both. I would rate ND's schedule a 7. They haven't played the top-5 teams but they play no MAC, Sun Belt, or FCS teams while everyone else has played them. USC was supposed to boost their schedule but Barkley will miss the game, so that does take a little away.

About K-State - I can't drop them below Florida. They did something Florida couldn't do, win their conference. Now Florida has a better argument if they beat FSU next week. Oregon can still be in the mix with Oregon St and UCLA left. They should be ahead of UF also.

I'm not a Jeopardy qualifier gosh darnit. I answer as non-committal as possible when possible and when not possible I deflect with semi-sort-of-wit and sarcasm.

I'm also not some blowhard self-anointed ESPN analyst who thinks they are paid to spout what they think will get them the most pub and are afraid to admit they simply don't know more than the average know-nothing.

Now if you will be so kind as to hear what I'm saying then I will say it again.

They are what you see them as. They are as good or as bad as the beholder values their accomplishments. They are deserving of their spot in the rankings based on the record they hold as that record compares to the others around them. They will, like it or not, play for the National Title should they win their final game against USC.
 
LSU played Florida, South Carolina, Texas A & M, Alabama, Mississipi St, Miss, and will play Arkansas next week. These games were played in back to back to back weeks. There are NFL teams that didn't have such a tough schedule let alone a college team.
