Might as well move this weekly thread over here.

So I didn't get out to any new releases this week. I rented a couple movies new to DVD though.

Whip It - This is Drew Barrymore's directorial debut about Roller Derby - but about oh so much more: friendship and family and acceptance and girl-power. I don't know why I'm taking a cheeky cheesy tone here because you know what? It was pretty watchable. Chock full of cliches but I thought it worked. 6 out of 10.

The Escapist - British film about an attempted prison break starring Brian Cox. I'm afraid this falls into the category of polished turd for me. Maybe using the word turd is going too far but what I mean is it looks good and it has wonderful acting and mood and atmosphere, but there was just a bit too much dopiness for my taste. The more I think about what I saw, the more holes I find. Plus I had difficulty understanding the accents at times. I rate it a 5.0001 out of 10. Mild rental recommendation. If nothing else, the ending provides a lot to talk about in terms of guessing what it means.

Supplementary topics of discussion - Is Drew Barrymore hot? Is Drew Barrymore a good actress? What do you suppose Juliet Lewis would smell like? Why doesn't Ellen Page call me?

I vote no to Barrymore being hot. She is an ok actress.

Juliet Lewis probably smells good when wearing perfume, probably smells a little fishy down below.

Ellen Page does not call you because you are a bike riding, movie watching, apartment dwelling FAG that will die alone.

You're welcome.

Watched some oldie rentals.

Somewhere in Time - Had never seen this oldie before. Apparently it is one of Robyn's top movies ever. It was depressing with no happy ending in sight, which I thoroughly enjoy. Jane Seymour is absolutely gorgeous. Still today she looks damn good. I got nervous for a few scenes when Christopher Reeve was riding on a horse. I also coined a new saying that will get some mileage - "Damn you door inventor!!!"

The State: Season 2
- Been almost 20 years since this sketch comedy ran rampant on MTV. Season 2 nowhere as consistently funny as Season 1, but still some gems, highlighted by Baloney Sandwich Feet guy.

Memento - Hadn't seen this in years. Can you believe it's 10 years old? Brought back many naughty memories involving Polaroid cameras, before the digital age. And the large pubic bushes that Polaroid would immortalize.

Supplemental - No, Barrymore hasn't been hot since Firestarter (runs).

i still think its bullshit that they don't make polaroid film anymore.

can not look at ellen page since hard candy

I do not find Drew Barrymore hot. I have seen a long in-depth interview with her and I like her and feel a kinship with her (relating to addiction issues). But hot? I would do her, sure, but she's not really what I would call hot.

I wonder why she is such a hot property for romantic comedies. Maybe it is because of believability. Katherine Heigl seems to be the new "it" girl for those. While I definitely understand why a producer would want her in their movie from an eye candy perspective, there is almost zero believability that a character looking like that would have trouble finding a man. Drew Barrymore? Seems more plausible.

She is uneven as an actress. I have seen her have some decent moments on screen. But in Whip It, she was awful. Her directing seemed fine but her acting scenes were stick-out-like-a-sore-thumb bad.

I'm way late to the party, but I finally saw Avatar in 3D this weekend. Cool sci-fi shit that doesn't insult your intelligence too much. I thought that the 3D was very well used throughout. And I didn't puke.

Drew Barrymore is girl friend material, emphasis on the space. Not hot.

Matt, when you comment that you didn't puke at Avatar, was that a general quality assessment or was it more specific about how the effects did make some people (like me) feel carsick at times?

I haven't seen this since it came out. I liked it a lot at the time but have heard comments about how it doesn't work nearly as well on subsequent viewings. Did you find that?

Motion sickness, Muddy. I have finally figured out that weak stomachs like mine simply need to sit a little further back so that the screen doesn't fill their field of view. Yay.

Yeah. I have had a lifelong thing with motion sickness and it did get to me some. Not as much as The Blair Witch Project - which I simply had to stop watching or I would have puked. But there was queasiness at times.

Great category for me...

Daybreakers Totally disappointed by this vamp film and normally these films intrigue me because I like to see the twists they put on it but this was one of those movies where they just ran out of steam.. I also think the movie makers where just too fucking confused and didn't know what to do towards the end. 4/10

Collapse Documentary about a guy who is a supposed genius and predicted the collapse of the economy, items with global warming and the wars in the middle east. I think this movie was a piece of shit and normally I love documentaries about this subject but the maker of the movie forgot 1 important thing that you simply cannot forget under any circumstance... BACK WHAT IS SAID UP WITH FACT! The whole movie is one guys opinion whom 95% of people have never heard of and personally it comes off as the guy is nuttier than a squirrel turd. 1/10

Blood Creek/Town Creek Preview looks interesting enough and stars one of the main guys from Prison break but my god this was a steamer I question why this movie was ever made. I mean it was directed by Joel Schumacher who used to be a well known director but if he has resorted to making this shit... career = over. 3/10

I saw a few more but really not worth commenting on.

Still have a few on the laptop I have to watch.. Invictus, Book of Eli and House of the Devil.

As for Drew... I never have cared for her and I don't think she is all that attractive. Then again like most of you degen's I would hit it if the opportunity came up.

The Hurt Locker - Just came out on DVD awhile ago. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time. It's about an Army bomb squad in Iraq. Excellent.

Nothing beats the first viewing on films of this nature where the time line is placed in a blender and served to the masses. But I still thought it was pretty damn clever.

This movie was so boring. I thought this looked like it had a good premise and might be a decent movie. Big mistake.

I just watched this week's edition of At The Movies. I though A.O. Scott's critique of The Rock's new vehicle, The Tooth Fairy, was brilliant in its economy of language.

"He's a hockey player who becomes the Tooth Fairy. Is there anything else to say besides SKIP IT?"

Barrymore = Not Hot in my opinion.

Finally got around to seeing Inglorious Basterds last night. LOVED IT. Since I'm a big Tarentino fan, not sure why I'm surprised by how much I enjoyed it, but yeah. 8.75/10 for me.
