Anyone else following this? The official Church statement issued today or yesterday...

"We know this may come as a surprise to someone as self-absorbed as Ms. Remini," the Church said in a statement to ABC, "but we could care less if she wins or loses on 'Dancing With the Stars.'"

This is the most ridiculous "official church statement" I have ever heard. Even for the nuts at COS it's a little much.

Is there actual documentation of this statement with a primary source? Sounds like tabloid hyperbole to me.

Also. Since Scientology is recognized as a religion I don't understand why people speak about it so derisively (similarly with Mormonism). I think that all religions are ridiculous as fok but people think its ok to call scientologisys crazy - where if you called a jew cheep you'd be looked upon as prejudiced. I dunno.

Yes. It has been all over the news...legitimate news ie. ABC etc...Her comments were made on the air on DWTS and the "church" statement was given to a journalist the next day I believe.

As a Christian, (no comments from the peanut gallery please) I tend to shy away from mocking any legitimate world religions. I have a few beefs with the Mormans, but overall they are very good decent people with good moral values so I tend to "leave them alone."

But the Scientologists are on a whole new level, ..if you don't know much about Scientology or Dianetics it's pretty interesting to read about but weird. . It was never even meant to be a religion. Stemmed from Hubbard and some Sci Fi books he wrote I believe. I have read enough about how they control some of the members (they solicit the celebrities and are all about the $$$$$) I believe they believe we are aliens or certain people are aliens and they do this process of "auditing" people....it's gotten a little hazy but I think I'll read up some today out of my own curiousity. It's a cult. I picked a random link if anyone is interesting in learning more...the link has links so I assume if this article is slanted, the others will be as well....but there are plenty of books out there too about this cult.

I don't find scientology any more ridiculous than any religion. It's all just a bunch of made-up stuff that people choose to believe because of fear and wishful thinking.

The interesting thing about scientology is everyone knows it is made up. It was written by dudeguy and no one is pretending otherwise. It's like - TA DA! - here's our stuff and it's obviously flaming nonsense. Whaddaya gonna do about it?

Well maybe they wouldn't actually say that.

Somehow I knew that would be the essence of many responses here.

However, there is where we differ. I find it infinitely more ridiculous than most major world religions. It's not even a true religion (imo), it's a cult....and a ridiculous one at that. ....and an expensive one....

And an expensive one.

Or maybe it seems so much more ridiculous because it's so recent? Because the author of Scientology's stories is a figure we know some things about?

Every religious text I'm familiar with has as much far-fetched sci-fi as L Ron Hubbard's work. I'd be willing to bet that just about every major religion appeared very cult-like at its inception.

wait a minute. Celebrities are aliens, proven through that picture cross thingy. This is the most realist religion yet.

Ya know, some of this stuff actually isn't bad:

"Scientology beliefs revolve around the thetan, the individualized expression of the cosmic source, or life force. The thetan is the true identity of a person an intrinsically good, omniscient, non-material core capable of unlimited creativity.

In the primordial past, thetans brought the material universe into being largely for their own pleasure. The universe has no independent reality, but derives its apparent reality from the fact that most thetans agree it exists. Thetans fell from grace when they began to identify with their creation, rather than their original state of spiritual purity. Eventually they lost their memory of their true nature, along with the associated spiritual and creative powers. As a result, thetans came to think of themselves as nothing but embodied beings."

As religious doctrine goes, I sorta like it.
